From what the way that you've described it sounds like a need for SSL encryption, so at least encrypting the data in transit. Depending on the data, you should also check whether the data should be encrypted at rest. Do you have a test environment of some sort? That's going to make the most sense in terms of testing things before making the changes, but you do definitely need to come up with a plan first. Optional encryption is possible, but also somewhat self defeating. However, you need to make a best faith effort and see if there is a way to encrypt the data flow without breaking anything (or at least have a plan to be able to fix the anticipated break). If there is some reason that you can't and you can make a strong case, then bring it up to security so that it can get reviewed as whether it is a risk the organization is willing to accept.
