What is non-standard port? How it is very safe?

I am using port 1433 to access SQL server. But I heard it is not safe and should use a non-standard port.

What is non-standard port? Is that any range for that?
Why is it very safe? What is the best-recommended port to use?

Nonstandard port is basically a port that's not the default one for a given application. There are several explanations of it already, so no point in my delving into it.

Are you accessing the SQL database from inside or outside of the network? If the answer is outside, that's a major red flag to have the port for SQL open on the firewall. However, you're also only telling us that you're connecting by a certain port, might we ask the purpose and/or other application involved? We might be able to assist more, but only with more information.
Non standard ports are ports that have no know applications running on it.

Non standard ports are safe in the event they are no public facing.  Meaning changing ftp standard port of 22 to say 6665, then you can use port forward or port trigger to say connection coming on 22 with right credentials gets forwarded to port 6665 for ftp
