Just jump in.  Politics (in America, at least) are supposed to be for everyone.  Join your local school board and work your way up from there.
Be ready to be a big liar. You have to promise things that you know you will not be able to keep and you will be pushed for that by the others around you.
Then be ready to be a puppet. You will not do what you would like to do, you must obey to the powerful people in background who are never coming in front, but they have the strings.
Most of your good intentions will vanish after a while and you have to lie yourself that you have done the best of it when comes the time of compromises.
Your soul will be wicked in years and you must decide: either to go on and lose your soul or give up politics.

Best way to get involved in politics is to work for a local representative.  Someone on either your local City Council or perhaps a local State representative's office is a great way to get started in politics.  Be prepared for some not-so-glamorous  work like knocking on doors or setting up booths at local events.  Its grinding work at the beginning but if you can get a job on a campaign during an election and that person gets elected, it's a great way to get your foot in the door for a career in politics.  Hope this helps.
