4TB external hard drive with Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR)
I would like to buy some 4TB (or larger) external hard drives with Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR).
Does anyone know of something that fits the bill?
I am finding that the manufacturers are unable to provide me with this information.
Thank you.

All disks made since about 2007 have been PMR.
What you want is a characteristic of the drive and does not / should not have anything to do with application / operating system storage of data.
So what is your user objective at this point?

andyalder, I am confused by your comment. Why do you say that? It seems to contradict everything that I have read about the newer high capacity drives using SMR. Here is an example article from 2015:
http://www.storagereview.com/what_is_shingled_magnetic_recording_smr/
Here is a review of drive that I bought recently:
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/pc-components/storage/disk-drives-hdd-ssd/seagate-backup-plus-8tb-desktop-drive-1290901/review
This drive would not work with my NAS drive. I was informed that my NAS was not compatible with SMR drives and that I needed to buy myself a PMR drive. I hope that answers your question John Hurst.

Thank you for the update.
I would have thought the drive engineering internals should not matter to the NAS.
Check / Update the NAS Firmware and also check it can handle a 4 TB drive. Do you currently have 4 TB drives installed?

The NAS firware is as up-to-date as it can be. It is currently working with a Seagate Backup Plus Desktop 4TB. The 8TB version would not work. I would buy more of the Seagate Backup Plus Desktop 4TB but they have been discontinued.
The 8 TB may exceed the firmware capability. I cannot comment on such a large drive. Still, I think the issue would be more firmware related than engineering specs.
SMR is still PMR. Do you want non-SMR disks?

andyalder, thank you for that clarification. (The articles I have read seemed to give the impression that they were mutually exclusive.) But, yes, you are right; I am looking for a non-shingled disk.
I will take a look at your links.
Thanks

Unfortunately I don't think that any of those drives are external drives.
Oh, this is to backup the NAS rather than go in it?
What NAs is it I'm sure they have a list of compatible drives and of course you can always buy an external case to put it in.
