Tried a fairly straightforward install of SQL 2014 to a Win 2008 R2 box that had SQL 2008 on it earlier(but uninstalled). The only settings I changed from default was the location of the databases to a path on the D: drive.
Tried Googling but found nothing that seemed to apply.
Even during an install? That would suggest every installation would fail then. What am I missing?
Regardless, will try that as well. Am waiting for a VSphere snapshot to catch up to the current (uninstalled) position. Ah. Done now.
Doing the next steps now.

Yes since you are using a different data directory (probably reusing a data directory from a previous install), a next, next, next install will put the data files in c:\program files\Microsoft sql server\MSSQLxx.MSSQLSERVER each version has its own folder

Well this is interesting. I just renamed the data and backup store (d:\mssql\data & ...\backup) and recreated them after logging in as the domain admin. Ran the install and it went through just fine.
I misspoke about the earlier version; the databases were (are) on SQL 2012. That box is still live and in production status. I'm assuming I can import a backup from that server and/or pull a copy of the databases across with no major issues?
Thanks! As often as I do this, I always feel like I fell down the rabbit hole.
