experts,

I need to be able to monitor for a http response code for an https site. Since the response code is encrypted during the TLS session I am unable to monitor on that. What would you recommend to monitor on an https connection to ensure that the site is up? I don't just want to monitor the tcp port.

Is it a requirement that your monitoring is done as "man-in-the-middle"? If so, I don't see how it would be possible without some exploit.

If not, the web server access_log/error_log should give you the response code.

let me rephrase. I want to monitor so that I will receive an alert when the website that is being served from the webserver is down.
with HTTP I can monitor the response code.  What can I monitor for when it is HTTPS?
