ERROR 1064 how to use MYSQL command line in DOS
Hello. Can someone tell me how to get the MYSQL command line stuff to work in DOS? I installed WAMP on my windows 8.1 computer. By installing that I also installed MYSQL 5.7.14. So I go to this directory C:\wamp64\bin\mysql\mysql5 .7.14\bin and start mysql by using the command mysql -uroot -p. I'm able to log in just fine but when I do something as simple as importing a new database I get errors. For example, after a brand new install of WAMP and mysql I tried to import one of my MYSQL databases using this command:
mysql -uroot -p mydatabase < c:\mydatabase.sql;
When I press enter I get this error:
EEEOR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the namual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'mysql -uroot -p mydatabase < c:\mydatabase.sql'
I get the same error even if I do a simple command like mysql -v;
But other commands work like show databases;
Can anyone tell me what I need to do in order to get this to work?
mysql -uroot -p mydatabase < c:\mydatabase.sql;
When I press enter I get this error:
EEEOR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the namual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'mysql -uroot -p mydatabase < c:\mydatabase.sql'
I get the same error even if I do a simple command like mysql -v;

Can anyone tell me what I need to do in order to get this to work?

There could be something wrong with the dump file but I don't think that is the problem. When I try some commands like mysql -u root -p I 'm able to log in successfully and run mysql commands. And that is what led me to ask my question. B'c I can run some commands like mysql -u root -p and it works fine but others give me that error that I put above. Also, I don't think my dump file was a problem because I was able to import that same file using phpMyAdmin. I would say that solved my problem but for my databases over that are over 128mb that won't work. I have to use the command line for those databases.
If you are able to login and use SQL commands, that would indicate to me that the MySQL server is functioning properly.
There are some differences between the arguements given by inserting SQL into PHPMyAdmin and through the CLI.
My suggestion is to look up your my.cnf file and check if there are any issues with memory limitations, file size limits and so on.

Thanks again for the comment. Yes. MySQL server seems to be running fine. I checked and the only limitations I could find were in PhPMyAdmin. That has a 128mb limitation. I was thinking it may be different syntax with DOS? I don't know.

Hello @Tomas Helgi Johannasson. Yes. I've been trying that along with all the commands inside the mysql consol. It's just that some of them don't work. I'm wondering if that is i just b'c it is done through a dos shell window. It's weird how some commands work and some don't.
Have you now tried
As opposed to:
If so did it fix your issue?
c:\> mysql -uroot -p mydatabase < c:\mydatabase.sql
As opposed to:
mysql> mysql -uroot -p mydatabase < c:\mydatabase.sql;
If so did it fix your issue?

Hello. Thanks for the advise. I just tried both of those. When I try:
ERROR:

That is b'c it is waiting for ; to terminate the command. So when I type the ; I get this error:
ERROR 1064 <42000>: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'mysql -uroot -p mydatabase < c:\mydatabase.sql' at line 1
So then I try:
ERROR

ERROR 1064 <42000>: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'mysql -uroot -p mydatabase < c:\mydatabase.sql' at line 1
I don't even know where command '\m' is coming from.
mysql> -uroot -p mydatase < c:\mydatabase.sql
I get an error that says:ERROR:
Unknown command '\m'

I think you misunderstand:
When you get the
type
Then, from the actual "DOS" command line type:
and hit enter, it will ask for your password, enter it, and the db should be inserted.
That is, do NOT log into MySQL before issuing this command, if it works then Tomas should get the credit :)

exit

and hit enter, it will ask for your password, enter it, and the db should be inserted.

Ooohhh. Sorry about that. I just did what you said. At the mysql prompt (mysql>) I typed exit and got back into the dos shell. From there I typed this:
The system cannot find the file specified.
I also tried copying the .sql file to the directory that I was working in. C:\wamp64\bin\mysql\mysql5 .7.14\bin> . But I got the same error.
C:\wamp64\bin\mysql\mysql5.7.14\bin>mysql -uroot -p mydatabase < c:\mydatabase.sql
And I get this error:The system cannot find the file specified.
I also tried copying the .sql file to the directory that I was working in. C:\wamp64\bin\mysql\mysql5
try to copy the file to c:\mydatabase.sql and retry (normally I wouldn't suggest putting stuff in there, but for the sake of testing, see what happens)

Yes, again Tomas is right, it wasn't the sql file that was missing it was the binary. (Sorry!)

Hello @Tomas Helgi Johannsson and @Chris Jones. Thanks for the the responses. Sorry it took me so long respond. I had trouble getting mysql added to my system path. Windows is weird about how many characters can be in there. Mine was pretty big so I ended up having to go into the registry just to edit it. But after I got it done I did what you said. I copied the database to the root director (c:\) and did the command:
ERROR 1049 (42000) Unknown database 'mydatabase'
So then I tried to the same command with a ; at the end:
And when I pressed enter it gave me all this, but the database was not imported :
mysql -uroot -proot mydatabase < c:\mydatabase.sql
and now I get:ERROR 1049 (42000) Unknown database 'mydatabase'
So then I tried to the same command with a ; at the end:
mysql -uroot -proot mydatabase < c:\mydatabase;
And when I pressed enter it gave me all this, but the database was not imported :
C:\>mysql -uroot -proot mydatabase< c:\mydatabase.sql;

and reconnecting may take a longer time. Disable with
--disable-auto-rehash.
(Defaults to on; use --skip-auto-rehash to disable.)

No automatic rehashing. One has to use 'rehash' to get
table and field completion. This gives a quicker start of
mysql and disables rehashing on reconnect.

Tomas answered the question.
Was the dump made with a different version of MySQL?
what happens if you try mysql -u root -p ?
