Calendars are tough to create from scratch and I would avoid it.
Stick with ready made projects and I have had good success with fullcalendar https://fullcalendar.io/ You can use a json feed generated from your php files for data https://fullcalendar.io/docs/resource_data/resources_json_feed/. There is also kendo http://www.telerik.com/kendo-ui/scheduler
FullCalendar has been around for a long time and I suggest looking over the documentation. There will still be a learning curve but far less than recreating this wheel.
