SharePoint 2013 Search not working

We have a on prem 2013 SharePoint farm 2 WFE and an application server. Our Search is throwing the following errors:

The mount operation for the gatherer application 37804509-7ebe-4dd0-80f6-846e90d288e9-crawl-0 has failed because the schema version of the search gatherer database is less than the minimum backwards compatibility schema version supported for this gatherer application. The database might not have been upgraded.

As this is a production environment, we are reluctant to rebuild for fear of taking SharePoint offline.

I have looked and there is a lot of information for 2010 and not so much for 2013.

Have you recently done any upgrades or cycle of the SharePoint environment?

Through the central admin, when checking your Search Service Application Topology do you have green checkmarks across the board?

Often if you will restart the Windows service for search issues will clear up. I know not a fix, but this is Windows and sometimes a kick is what it takes to start fresh. Starting the search service will not bring down the farm.

Good luck...

Already tried that approach.  It sound like I need to rebuild the search application and hoping someone has gone through this before.

Yes I have rebuilt. There are a few thing to consider:
  • Index rebuild time - determine the disruption to the business while the search index rebuilds
  • Customized configurations may get lost - managed properties etc...
  • Increased network traffic, so make sure you do it off hours

Try other steps before a rebuild though. The message may not be totally accurate and sometimes misleading. Sometimes easy things such as service account being locked out can throw the worst looking messages.

Good luck... and remember on the rebuild, PowerShell is your best friend.

Walter Curtis - thanks for the informatio - its been a couple of years since I touched this. a couple of questions:
during index rebuild - is the site still available, just search isn't working?
any Powershell scripts would be most appreciated

Any other recommended steps?
