Apple Mail won't talk to Exchange 2016

We recently migrated from Exchange 2010 (in SBS 2011) to Exchange 2016.  Outlook clients, OWA, ActiveSync (iPhone / iPad) are fine.  Autodiscover is in place and all the tests at https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/ show up with a pass, including the EWS tests.

Accounts in Apple Mail however, do not work.  The accounts were set up previously and as the OWA internal and external URLs have not changed (DNS is updated correctly) the accounts should still work, but don't.

Also if we set up the accounts from scratch, autodiscover populates the server settings correctly with the EWS URL, but then the same error:

"Unable to verify account name or password"

We have tried DOMAIN\username, username@domain.local, username@domain.com, etc. to no avail.

The users do not want to use OWA in Safari.  How can we get an Exchange 2016 mailbox working in Apple / Mac Mail?

Thanks in advance as always for any advice.

Do you also happen to have office 365 and exchange online?  Is your Old Exchange 2010 turned off?

No Office 365, it's all on-premises.  The Exchange 2010 is still there at the moment, I plan to migrate the public folders and uninstall it today.  Could that be the problem?

Is it still running as the hub?

No, all ports and DNS entries point to the Exchange 2016 server.

Hi David,

Have you tried to set it up manually without the Autodiscover populating all the information? If not, just head over to System Preferences/ Internet Accounts/Scroll down and select "Mail Account"/start inputting data. If for some reason Autodiscovery keeps bothering you, just input a fake email and password till it defaults to a manual setup.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Justin,

Yes, it doesn't seem to make any difference though.  All I get is "Unable to verify account name or password", whatever the settings are.  What's frustrating is that it doesn't give any more verbose information that might help me.  Most likely I think we will give up and just use the web-based Outlook Web App, which works fine (as long as Silverlight is up to date to allow you to attach files) - or get Outlook.

It's just strange because it used to work in Exchange 2010, and everything else is all working fine.
