is that mean if I setup exchange mailbox and it is working, then I can even uninstall the outlook connector and use it as exchange mailbox ?

the notes item will also store in exchange server in MS, right ?

previous only Notes item is not store in their server.
Yes you have 2 choices if I remember well one would be to install as Exchange mailbox and the second to install as IMAP both will discontinue the outlook connector and yes you can un-install it. Actually the first step of all this is to disconnect your current email in outlook or remove it then you install either way. I personnaly have done this for couple of my emails and recall one of them was configured as exchange mailbox.

one thing, when i create a test mailbox to outlook.com, it seems that the mailbox must be on C:\, how can I configure it so that this kind of mailbox store on somewhere else?
1) You locate your mailbox on usually under
C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
you will see MailboxName.ost copy or move this file to the location you desire.
2) Open Control Panel and choose Mail
3) If you have a profile then click on Profile and select the Profile that contain your Exchange Mailbox and click on Property then choose Data Files and there Click on your Mailbox and press on Open File Location it will point you to your Mailbox file note it and copy it and move it to the location you want and then close the window.
4) If you don't have a profile then select after Mail Data file and you will be at the same place as item 3.

IF any problem let me know.

The answer is NO.

All Outlook.com accounts has been upgraded to Exchange already and auto account setup is the best option.

https://www.msoutlook.info/question/add-an-outlookcom-account-to-outlook

My experience is that if you have a huge mailbox on Outlook.com, it will take ages to complete the sync if you setup your account as a IMAP account as sync slider is only available for Outlook 2013 or above.
@Jackie Man
It will take sometime to sync when in IMAP but then it will quickly sync the new items. I am using Outlook 2010 and its fine.
gowflow
Good.

Use the Exchange option is a better choice.
I have to admit I have challenges with synchronizing sometimes I get Downloading folders endlessly and cannot connect to server issues could it be that the settings of port have changed as they moved it around several times from SSL to TSL ?
gowflow
Agreed.

My Hotmail account is registered more than a decade before and IMAP is not an option for me as downloading never finished.

When I setup my Hotmail account as an Exchange account, problem is solved.
Will give it a try for one of the accts I have.
gowflow
Jackie,

 "The answer is NO."

it seems this is right.

"My Hotmail account is registered more than a decade before and IMAP is not an option for me as downloading never finished."

for me, it can finish.

"When I setup my Hotmail account as an Exchange account, problem is solved."

it seems a yes !

but it seems I can't change the default location to drive other than C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\%.ost.

any idea on how to change it ?

I just setup the mailbox by backing up the notes item for IMAP mailbox, now only setup the mailbox as if they are exchange mailbox and it works now.

but
but it seems I can't change the default location to drive other than C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\%.ost.

any idea on how to change it ?

Where do you want to save the .OST file? Why you want to change?
"Where do you want to save the .OST file? Why you want to change?

e:\

I want all email box store in a central location so  that I can back them up.
Did you try what I suggested in post ID: 42123632 ?
gowflow
Is e: drive a network drive or external drive? Or it is just a virtual mapping (junction point) from c: drive?

Placing the .OST in a network drive or External drive are not a supported configuration as it will lead to mail profile corruption as there are tendency that the  user log off / shut down the computer before the offline cache (OST) is saved.

Unless you setup the email account as a POP account, there is no need to do a backup.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/oemail-osend/what-are-pop-and-smtp-settings-for-outlookcom-mail/4426c135-ba1a-4eea-9e99-c3c0f3ef901e

The reason is simple, the OST file is just a cache file and the data still resides on Exchange Online.
Corruption will not lead to data loss, but will) result in loss in the productivity of the user as it might take a long time (about 10 minutes) before the user can log into MS Outlook if there is a corruption.
hi gowflow:

"press on Open File Location it will point you to your Mailbox file note it and copy it and move it to the location you want and then close the window."

I open the file location and see my files, but it is not a setting to change the location, right?

I am sorry to have one extra concern related to the use of outlook connector, what i want to connect/read yahoo/gmail.com email via outlook, still need outlook connector ?
The Hotmail Outlook Connector is obsolete in terms of OL'2013/'2016 regardless of what the account is but has never been required in any version of Outlook for Yahoo or Gmail accounts.
"Outlook for Yahoo or Gmail accounts."

so how can I connect to yahoo or Gmail using outlook 2010 ?

ok, but when creating IMAP mailbox for yahoo.com.hk or gmail.com , it ask you for the incoming mail server name and outgoing mail server name, what should be that?
https://support.google.com/mail/answer/7126229?hl=en

You need to logon to webmail Gmail to enable POP / SMTP in settings first.
If you have a large mailbox, it is better to upgrade to MS Outlook 2013 or above so that you can use sync slider for IMAP account.
gowflow,

"Did you try what I suggested in post ID: 42123632 ?"

I tried but it only make the open file location button greyed, it can't see that file on that path, the account setting page I can still see it is in the old path.

I put the file back and the "open file location " table available again.

"Select this new data file and click on 'Set as Default'
Close then Mail"

sorry I have more than one email box on the same computer, this made the all default email goes to this mailbox, right? this is true when i create an outlook calendar, it will save to default file.

Jackie:

"mail profile corruption as there are tendency that the  user log off / shut down the computer before the offline cache (OST) is saved."
I don't think it will be worse like that. someone might hate the sync time and prefer to to save email somewhere else.

for me, store all that to another job is a best practice.

I don't want to make C:\ full and busy , multiple disk for many purpose.

also tks for suggestion on outlook 2013. it seems Large mailbox and IMAP account doesn't related to each other, right?

Karl,

"#1 - Changing the location of the ost file associated with your Outlook.com account for the sole purpose of backing it up is completely pointless since an .ost file can only be accessed by the Outlook profile and email account that was used to originally create it.

both you and Jackie is right but if c:\ is not very big and we should find a way to relocate the BIG email file to other driver, just like the Windows 10 apps, once it is installed, it will be on the C:\, we can't change it, until C:\ is full.

it will be perfect if rearrangement can be much easier.

the move .ost link is working ok, tks.
tks all.
