Internet service was turned off but lan connection says still connected
Ok I really can't figure this out and I have been trying for months, hopefully somebody here can..
My internet was disconnected from lack of not paying the bill.
I would open my web browser from my laptop and it would say "unable to connect "
I Looked at my local area connection and it says..
Access type: Internet
HomeGroup: Joined
Connection : Local area Connection .... I still was connected. The web browsers still said unable to connect to network contact your isp...
So I went to wireless connections to see if anybody had a open wireless connection and I found one belkin guest 1.5 speed Very slow. .. My isp was cable with 40 mbps speed..
I connected to the wireless network but still had my ethernet connected to my modem..
The wireless connection opened into a browser "type password to get access"
I closed the browser and reopened it and my yahoo home page opened up..Did a speed test .. 46 mbps download 7 mbps upload ...What happened was my lan connection and modem kick in and took over the connection... But if I disconnect from the wireless network my lan connection won't open a web page....
Basically this is how I been getting internet access for the past 7 months..Using belkin guest wireless network to get to the browser saying type password in.. closing it then my connection takes over.. Can anybody explain this

1st hop is mine network ... I don't know dude
On your Network Connection change the ipv4 DNS from "Obtain from DHCP" to "Use the following DNS Server Address" and enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
Disconnect from the Belkin and see if you get on.

You may have found a loop hole in their system.
When you go back to Obtain ip From DHCP and disconnect the Berkin. What are your dns servers ip?

i went back to obtain dns server auto,,, ip is 24.196.240.1
ASKER
does this make any sense
ASKER
9 months free internet
ASKER
Charter is the isp
Once you on their DNS server 24.196.240.1 and not on Belkin is when you are not able to browse the internet, right?
I can only speculate that your ISP DNS server is not working properly or they are controlling the access via their DNS server.
By you entering your own DNS server you are bypassing this.
I will put money on it that you will be able to get to google or any other site if you have the ip for the server rather than the DNS name.
Here is the ip for www.google.com 172.217.7.228
Try this and see if it works

ASKER
you know i had around 10 people like u look into this,, your the 1 that figure it out my hats off to u
I am not an attorney, but this seems more legal than what you were doing prior. This is a conncetion that you were paying. It is not like you removed your electical meter so you can grow massive amount of WEED. The provider missed something when it came to canceling your service. What they should have done was to deactivate your modem, but they did not. They figured using DNS to control this would work. By your bypassing their DNS (which is legal) you are able to resolve IP's to Domains.

Just an FYI; it's still theft of service even if the ISP did not disconnect him completely. It's not up to the ISP to prevent you from using something your not paying for.
Jim.

Run an TraceRT to www.google.com while you are connected as well as disconnect to the wifi. See what your first hop is. If the tracert returns the gateway of the Berkin than you are going through open wifi network.
When you are not connected to wifi what is your DNS servers ip's. Does your LAN connection get any DNS servers?
If you manually setup your LAN DNS address to googles (8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4) and not connected to wifi are you able to browse the internet.
Another command I would try is NSLOOKUP and see what server returns.
These are some test I would run.
