Migrating from SBS 2003 to Server 2012R2: When to add member servers?

Hello everyone,

I am migrating a server from SBS 2003 to Server 2012 R2. The new server (Windows server 2012 R2) is currently running all the roles. I am about to transfer FSMO roles from SBS2003 to 2012R2.

I have another virtual 2012 R2 (with currently no roles installed) which I want to make back up DC, DNS, DHCP for my environment. I am in the dilemma whether to make this member server a DC before decommissioning the SBS or afterwards. The risk is that when the SBS is gone, I will have only the main Server2012R2 in my environment until the new member server is promoted to a BDC role.

I hope you can give me some idea.

Thanks,
Abid

Best practice is two DCs, always and I would stick to it

Thanks guys,

This addresses my concerns!

I will now go ahead and add the new Server2012 R2 as a member server and will add AD DS and DNS roles to it so that I don't have a single point of failure after decommissioning of SBS 2003.

I will close this ticket now and award points.

Thanks again,
