Mcafee comes in many "flavors" ...have you tried the unistaller tool

that does not answer the question about WHAT password is needed
Without knowing the whole story like who made the OS installation/antivirus installation..what version of Mcafee ...is is centrally administered ...possible policies...my best guess is to proceed to the uninstallation with whatever tool you can get...
Other than that if you have forgotten the password there should be a standard procedure to either reset or force you to proceed to full OS reinstallation...
EDIT: i am under the impression that you have a centrally administer version of Mcafee and either you have issues logging to the admin console or either perform an uninstall on a workstation controlled by Mcafee...
If you have the 1st case and you can't login then you have to check the Knowledge Base of Mcafee to see if there is a procedure to recover the password...Usually these centrally controlled antivirus rely on a SQL to store everything ...even then password so if you can get the right table it would be an easy procedure to reset it (UPDATE)
If you have the 2nd then probably there is a missed option that controls the antivirus blocking unauthorized actions like uninstall (i have seen it on Avast)...

The password is whatever was set during installation or, if installed by an IT department or similar entity, the password will be whatever they set it to.

Mc Knife so you mean it's not the windows login password?
can i without that password uninstall McAfee, or remove that password?
can i without that password uninstall McAfee, or remove that password?
No, not the logon password. Since you will have administrative permissions, you can probably uninstall it without, but that would require manual steps, since the uninstall wizard will only work with that password. Have you searched McAfee's knowledgebase? There will be guidance somewhere.

ok i'll try that- but it can take a couple of days before i get to the laptop
