Updates for XP?

I do some work with a guy who sells POS systems, most of them running POSReady 2009, an XP based OS.
WHile we tend to only have sold these on Dell computers & I do have images that I can just restore to a hard drive, occasionally I'll get one that I have to install from scratch & getting the latest updates can be a pain!
Is there a way or place to DL the updates separately for future use?
I have also heard about creating an install DVD with the current updates slip streamed into it & any info on that would be appreciated, as well.

You can slipstream SP3 onto XP.

Updates still work for Security Essentials, Office 2003 updates with the Office 2007 compatibility pack and such like.

But really, such systems should not be sold at all. They should be upgraded to work with Windows 7 minimum.

Its a matter of software compatibility & the company doesn't have a version that runs on windows 7.
Support for POSReady 2009 runs out in 2019, from what I understand.

It is impossible today to slipstream all the XP and POSReady Updates into an XP distribution CD, because they don't fit on a CD.  I just did a Windows Update on my own XP system today after a four-month hiatus and it downloaded nearly 100 MB of Updates.

I suppose the Updates could be slipstreamed onto a DVD, but there are well over a hundred of them for POSReady alone.  Anyway, you end up paying the same price in lost time even if they're slipstreamed -- the Update has to be installed, whether at install time or later on using Windows Update, and it takes the same amount of time either way.

Possibly a solution is to build one prototype system, invalidate its activation key via the Registry, then make an image backup.  Then use that as the template for succeeding systems.  Restore the image backup onto the new system's drive and it will want an activation key first thing.  Then you have a legal new system with all the Updates (current to when the backup was made, of course) already installed.
Windows XP updates are still working - just no new ones added. So you can also do this.

Possibly I had too old of a version of IE?
Kept getting 'Page cannot be displayed' when trying to go to windows update.

Can they be downloaded as a stand alone update?
XP IE is way out of support.

Start the machine, make sure automatic updates are ON, and let if run for a couple of hours.

That is correct.  Microsoft has ... defeated ... access to windowsupdate.microsoft.com via Internet Explorer.  The only way to get the Updates is via Automatic Update.

You can make up a fairly up-to-date Windows XP.

I do this occasionally.  Yep, I run XP but not Internet facing.

First, you'll need a CD patched with SP3 (or find one).

Then go to https://ryanvm.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=25&sid=e57b36f31a087edb52accd6ee2c5ef80 for packs to install on top of that.  Best is the user_hidden pack (which is Number 2 on the list) which only does the essential fixes.  If you want everything (.NET, Silverlight etc etc) then get the nonno fabio pack which is Number 1 on the list.  If you get the nonno fabio pack you will probably need a DVD for installation purposes.  The user_hidden pack may fit on a CD if you trim out stuff that isn't needed on the base CD.

You'll also probably need nlite 1.4.93 and tutorials exist on how to use that on the Internet such as http://www.nliteos.com/guide/part1.html

If you want drivers as well then you will be needing a DVD for install purposes.

For drivers you'll need Driver Packs.  Go here http://driverpacks.net/ for your drivers.  Mass Storage and Chipset are a must.  Download is a Torrent - remember to share bandwidth.

You'll need the Driver Pack tool to integrate them into your DVD http://driverpacks.net/applications/latest

Much fun can be had this way.
XP Service packs for download are still available. I keep a set (SP1, 2, and 3) on my computer.
You can use NLIte with the unofficial Windows XP SP4

I don't think there is any Microsoft SP4 for XP, so use care with that. I am not sure how well supported NLite may be.

Trying the wsusoffline site, going to legacy tab (I'm on32 bit), getting 'error downloading / verifying updates for wxp enu. Log file says;
Wed 05/17/2017  7:39:09.76 - Info: Starting WSUS Offline Update download (v. 9.1) for wxp enu
Wed 05/17/2017  7:39:09.76 - Info: Option /includedotnet detected
Wed 05/17/2017  7:39:09.78 - Info: Option /verify detected
Wed 05/17/2017  7:39:09.78 - Info: Option /exitonerror detected
That suggests some issues with the XP machine. Will it run updates on its own at all?  You did not say above.

Updates did not run, even though set to.
IE can't display page, Firefox does, but not finding any xp stuff, other than reccomdstions to upgrade
Even though out of support, updates will still run on XP (must be done by internal update program). You can try leaving it overnight (updates default to 3:00am local time).

But if updates won't run and also WSUS Offline fails, there is something wrong with the installation of XP. I think you can run an XP repair from the XP CD.

There is no option to get to windows updates via the start menu - is there was way to enable or add that featuer? Not listed under add windows features...
Go to Control Panel, Automatic Updates and set from there. That works.

It was set & for whatever reason, BITS had been set to manual, which I changed, but still no updates over night. Trying the create ISO from the wsusoffline site from another computer & so far, it appears to be working
Once you get updates running, try David's suggestion for WSUS Offline.

Happened to notice little yellow shield in lower right corner, saying downloading updates 21%. Checking a while later & nothing. Went to shutdown & 181 updates available!

Yeah, I picked the install updates & then shut down. I know that POSReady 2009 is a stripped down OS, things like disk management & others aren't installed by default. Just don't get why the windows updates isn't in the start menu? Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, as my images cover a pretty wide range of Optiplex models we've used in the past, but lately have been hit with reinstalls needed on models we hadn't used in the past!

To recap, I had originally left the computer on last night, hoping that the updates would have run at 3:00 am. I tried the windows update offline & at first it appeared that it didn't work, but maybe it 'jogged something loose'? I went back to the computer & say the yellow shield & downloading updates, coming back an hour or so later, nothing showed updates available, but when I went to shut down, it showed 180-something. Let them run before shutting down, packed it up & sent it on its way.
Thanks to all!
You are very welcome, thanks for the update and I was pleased to help
