ESXI update version 5.5.0.1623387
Hi I am currently using ESXi version 5.5.0.1623387, I know it is very outdated. We have two VM's SBS 2011 and server 2012. I want to add server 2016 with SQL 2016 for Sage as a 3rd VM.
1) Will server 2016 work on the current version of ESXi?
2) Would it be better to update to 6.5 (If Yes how?) and what risk are involved.
3) Best just to upgrade to the latest 5.5 version?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Thanks Andrew and Shahnawaz,
Ok I have decided to update to latest version of ESXi 5.5.
Andrew one of the tech's I work with tried the upgrade method you are suggesting and he said this.
"I have done something similar once and it was not designed for the server and the disk drivers were not there and it did not work after at all
I think You need to find correct one for that server from hp"
It is for an HP Proliant DL380p G8, would I be better off getting the update from HP directly, or do you think your method is best?
Note: The original installation disk came from an ISO image from HP's support site for that specific server, which was configured with all the correct drivers.
Thanks again!

If you have installed an OEM version of ESXi from HPE, which is currently using OEM drivers, the installation, will update, e.g. add new running code from VMware, in addition to using those drivers, they will not be removed or changed.
in the event, the upgrade cannot continue, it will abort before upgrade.
Oh, and your tech is welcome to look for a HPE version of ESXi 5.5 Build 5230635, from HPE.

I will upgrade it your way Andrew. I will test on a spare server we have in our store and see how the upgrade process works so I am comfortable with it.
The test ESXi server I have is using 6.0.0, 2494585
What are the commands I would use for updating this version of ESXi to the latest 6.0 version, and where do I find these commands, so in the future I can do it myself.
Thanks

Exactly the same command but you change the version to use the offline patch file to the latest availabile for 6.0
Search the patchbdatabase at VMware for that

Great, thanks for all your help.
You can check the vmware KB2132789 for better understanding the compatibility of win2016 and esxi5.5
Note - windows 2016 is compatible with esxi5.5
User below article to understand the upgrade from 5.5 to 6.0 to 6.5
