Windows Server 2016 Backup Completes with Warnings 9 nights out of 10
Running Windows Server 2016 Essentials. Windows server Backup completes 'with warnings' 9 nights out of 10. The message is: Bare metal recovery backup and system state backup both report One of the system components is not consistent in the shadow copy created for backup. Detailed error message: The writers timeout expired between the freeze and the Thaw events. Can anybody help me find out what is causing these VSS writer timeouts?

Are you using the essentials client backup component?

The internal backup engine should master all states an OS can be in. Hard to find out what might be the problem.
I'd retry with a different imaging tool: take a free trial (no installation needed) of http://www.drivesnapshot.de/en/down.htm
See if that one has any problems. (Just for a test - I am not telling you to switch backup solutions).

I am using Windows Server backup as provisioned in the Windows Server Essentials Taskbar.  I have done this in a number of other clients using both Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2016 and don't get this problem elsewhere - and it isn't every night - just most.

You may be onto something here. I am going to disable all client backups and remove the client backup database and see if it makes a difference

Thanks
