Just type "windows defender" you can see. Ensure it is updated.
looks like i have to manually turn on.
i just turned on
If you turned it on, then it will start itself when you start Windows
I use AVG Free for 10 years...
in other computer I use 360 Security...
my brother uses Avast...

forget about defender :) it is not comparable with these...

I play games + do business + everyday work...

recommend AVG and 360 Security

both same or different?

Not true. Microsoft has improved Defender so that is it top rated. Much better than AVG. I keep have to rip that out of clients because it does not protect well.
Antivirus isn't very effective these days anyway - which one you use is almost irrelevant.  If you're not careful in what you do, you WILL be infected by something even with the SUBJECTIVE best product out there.  Doesn't mean you shouldn't run one - you definitely should, but if you think you'll be safe because you have something, you are VERY VERY WRONG.
some review for

MS Defender
AVG
Avira
Avast

What are you basing those statements on?

If you take the time to look at the latest available Independent AV Comparative reports (March 2017 and April 2017) Microsoft's AV has out performed other commercially available products.

I'm not particularly fond of Windows Defender either, but to deny Defender's performance in real world independent tests is just plain silly.

Besides that, you would be hard pressed to find an AV product that was as compatible with Windows 10 as it's own built in solution! :)

Why use an affiliate link to download a free antivirus?

If anyone just wants to download AVG free, then it can be downloaded here:

http://www.avg.com/ca-en/homepage
@Andrew Leniart

both URLs  are redirected to a page where free AVG can be downloaded.

Not sure of the point you are making?

What are you basing those statements on?

the reviews, comparisons, av reports, forums and my experience...
There are many, many views and reports over time, and not standard. So there is no standard answer.  I have seen reports putting Symantec Endpoint Corporate top and bottom, Windows Defender top and bottom but both have worked reliably for me. Others will think differently.
Best is always a subjective term. Any testing of a product group only gives you their test results using their testing methods. Nothing will protect you from everything, this is why we purchase insurance, (a good backup policy is a form of insurance).

Most of the time the problem is between the keyboard and the chair.

Anti-Virus has taken a backseat these days to anti-malware and the PUP's (Potentially Unwanted Software) and there is the biggest one ransom-ware.

Ransomware authors are pretty devious, they use social engineering to get you to install their loader. The loader is many times a custom loader for each recipient of the email message, just enough is changed to make AV Signature Based rules become useless.

Perhaps running a detect activity item that detects 100 file modifications or renames per minute that then shuts down the machine or disables the network  with a message to the user.  This approach is only a band-aid unfortunately and does use system resources.

Pretty much a pain, since all I want to do is run World of Tanks with a high frame rate.
don' t forget what i posted :   the best protection is a cautious user - that does not click on everything !
no no, best protection is never ever turn the pc on :)
Agree with nobus cautious user is best protection as well. We have to educate our users how to handle viruses by email, memory, hdd etc.
I am using defender since long time and no issues until now.
huseyn  -then you better be not born if you reason that way
