asked on

wireless network configuration

Is there a how-to guide to deploying wireless access points in a small business?  Something that will help in deciding the number and placement of APs based on configurations of the space , the building materials, (gypsum wallboard on metal studs),  the number of PCs to be served. and the optimal wireless standard e,g, N, AC etc.

Total space about 1000 sq ft..  It is an animal clinic.  There will be five PC: two will be in adjoining exam rooms,  and three more in exam rooms directly across a hallway and adjacent to each other in a row.  Total space of the five rooms with the PCs is maybe 500 sq ft

I'd like to have some way other than trial and error of deciding if one AP will work for all five, or if I should have one AP for the two adjoining rooms and another in the middle room of the three adjoining..  And to decide on AC vs N.  I'm leaning to AC1200, but no good reason for that.

And guidance on placement.  In the ceiling resting on drop ceiling panels is one choice.

To David Johnson.  Re "what the users support"  Do you mean the wireless components of the PCs?   They are 17" laptops:  two are Dell Precision M6600's with whatever wireless components those come with .  I've not bought the other three yet, but they will the same or not  quite as good.
These do not support AC only A/B/G/N
David.  If I did want to invest in AC APs would USB AC adapters in the Laptops bring them up to AC or is the no-AC-here still the case at some lower, i.e. MoBo, level?
I would get an AP that supports both N and AC. Sort of future proofing a bit.
Any opinion about my putting in two APs: 1 for the 2 PCs in adjacent rooms and one in the middle of the other 3 adjacent rooms?  Is there a way to tell if result is overkill -- or under?
Are you planning to have unique SSID's.
If so you will be able to segment the computers how you like. I do not think it is overkill
Yes you can use USB Wireless AC adapters. I would turn off the provided wireless if you go this route to eliminate interference.
Any thoughts on whether 1 AP for all 5 PCs, centrally located? The two farthest from each other are separated by only about 50 feet.

Thanks all.  Your combined answers helped me know what to do. Just to wrap up, I went with a Linksys LAPN300, mainly because it seemed more than adequate (and seems to be proving to be so), was a great price at MicroCenter, and for maximum compatibility  with my Linksys Dual-WAN modem, which my modem installer suggested was important.
AP choice has no relevance to the modem/router. Any AP will be compatible unless the router has controller capabilities.
