VMware Copy between two hosts

Hello -  i have initiated vmotion of a VM between two hosts over a specific vmotion network.  this network has 1 cat 6 cable attached between both servers and vmotion enabled on both hosts.  preliminary tests proved to move a VM between the hosts at a rate of 400 GB/Hour.  however the monster VM, 17TB, is causing me alot of concern.  the VM has 4 VMDK's, 500 GB, 13.5 TB, 1 TB and another 1 TB. i started my Vmotion sometime around 4:30 PM yesterday and it only finished copying the 500Gb vmdk at 4 AM (about 12 hours) it has begun the largest of the volumes (13 TB @ 4 am) it looks like it wil take  3 weeks to complete.

my goal is to have this done by Tuesday AM.  The current state of the VM is turned off as i thought it would help it along faster.

anything else i can do???  should i cancel the job, turn on the VM and start the vmotion this way when tuesday rolls around, the VM is running with some latency.

let me know

and that might be the issue. With your dedicated NIC you can get as much as 450 GB/hr, as you already have seen. If that interface is used, it cannot be the limiting factor.
But yes, if you have the necessary license, use vMotion with a VM being switched on.
On another note, VM hosts should have a shared storage for quick switchover.

i appreciae the input and you guys add valid points.  no buts here.  just something i should have consider with a cold storage move versus vmotion.  i know in my tests, a vmotion, while the machine was on over its dedicated 1 GB network and nic, showed me that throughput and this is the first time i am moving a vm while it has been turned off.

with regards, to licensing, i am using Enterprise licensing but these are using robo licensing. i am migrating data from the old host to the new at a remote office.

im thinking of canceling the migration and turning on the VM and then bring up the vm and perform the vmotion.

what do you think?
Do you have Storage vMotion license?

Otherwise moving VM disks e.g. On storage is going to be slow

Backup and Restore would be quicker

Or change management networking
You should be good to go with your ROBO license it has Storage vMotion cancel and Power On a VM and Storage vMotion

What is the VM?
Because all the data will be written too a snapshot whilst it takes time to move the data

If you storage is not up to it this could cause you issues if this is a busy io intensive VM
this is a local link - nothing remote with the exception of the Vsphere client interaction with the host.

i believe the storage vmotion is included in the Enterprise license.

This is the enterprise license.

awesome! thank you! :D
Thank you Andrew for the advice, i see that its progressing faster.  i appreciate the hand
Thank you andrew
Hi andrew - i am wondering if you can answer this question for me.  how can i tell on progress of my vmotion?  Vcenter tells me im at 47% but i know for sure it has been copying over the 17 TB disk.  is there a way i can pull some real-time metrics?

thanks
you would need a Deep Dive on the logs, in \var\log
