Server 2016 AD + RDS server licencing/structure

Hi,

We have a client with a brand new server with 2 x Xeon E5-2620 v4 CPUs, 32gb ram, etc.

We are deploying Server 2016 (still stuck between standard & datacenter). Having AD + RDS on one server is not ideal, so we would like to split it, without purchasing a second physical server.

What's the best way to go about this:
1. Install Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016 and have two separate VM's running?
2. Install Server 2016 standard/datacenter with the AD role + file sharing, and mount a vm in hyper-v with the RDS role?
3. Any other ideas?

And with regards to licencing, do I have to buy a separate server 2016 for each install?

Thanks!

Thanks guys! Its as I though, but I just wanted to check first. I've now installed the Hyper-V core edition, and ready to start the next stage...

Lee - can I ask the following:
1. Whats the issue with the CPU we have, especially as we have two of them? What would you recommend instead? This server will host around 10-15 concurrent sessions and mainly for Microsoft office etc. Specs for the CPU: goo.gl/4QD2rD
2. In general, is there an RDS performance difference when hosted in a VM rather than installed on the bare metal?

Thanks again,
Leo

Thanks Rob. Do you know how much of an impact the full GUI version has on performance?
We're talking approx 10-15 users.

Thanks Rob & Lee.

Lee - your article 'Virtual or Physical' made an excellent read, and really cements the argument for Virtual. Thank you!
