Printer is in "Error State"
A friend has an HP 4330. There was an earlier paper jam which I cleared, I printed a test page & all that (Windows 10).
I am trying to print form Adobe Acrobat ( a .pdf). It says printing, then a message comes that says HP4330 is in an error state.
I looked it up on Google, found a "hard" restart (so called), unplug all cords, power, wait 60 seconds, etc. Did all that, no change.
Now even the print test page fails.
Any ideas?

There are 2 points I'd like to see clarified:
1. What is the printer model? There are the HP Laserjet 4300 and 4350, but no 4330. There is also the Officejet 4630 and the Designjet 430.
2. Most Laserjets have a display that gives information about any problems. Is there any message on the printer's display? If the printer has no display, are any red or orange lights blinking or on permanently?

Sorry, it is a 4360.
I will try the hard restart again, I admit ignored the business about directly plugging into the wall, I could not see how that would matter, I will do it that next.

There is no message on the display.
Is the 4360 "old"?

The Officejet 4360 is not that old: the data sheet is dated July 2013.
If the printer has no message on the display and the "On" button is not blinking, then the problem, would not appear to be in the printer. You say the printer won't print a test page. As far as I know, the only way to print a test page on this printer is via the driver. Hence I would try reinstalling the driver.
Start by deleting the printer from Devices and Printers.
As it's an HP printer, first see if you can remove the software from Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Then go back to Devices and Printers, click on any other printer driver and select "Print Server Properties" from the menu that pops up. Click the Drivers tab and remove any instances of the printer from the list. Now reinstall from the CD or from a downloaded copy of the driver.

Please let us know about the next hard reset and how it goes.
It should be able to print a test page whether a driver is installed or not.

To all,
I am trying to resolve this.
I now have it to the point where I can print a test page & I can print a Word document.
But some parts of Windows still sees two versions of the printer; the original & "Copy 1".
In the printer devices, it shows as attached (note, there is ONLY Copy 1). When I print a word document, it gives the choice of both the original & copy 1. If it was just me, I could ignore that & live with it, but this will probably be too complex & too much to remember.
Is there a way to make "Copy 1" truly the default & remove the other reference altogether from this computer?
Thanks

I do not see the original in your screen shot. No issue at all if the one and only printer says Copy 1.

John,
That's right.
But if you do a print from MS Word, it gives you the pulldown of printers that includes the original & it DOES NOT default to the default printer.
Also, I discovered (since the last post) that I cannot print a pdf; I suspect it is directing to the "old" (not Copy 1) version.
How can I clean up all traces of "two" instances of the same printer?

Look in Admin Tools, Printer Management. Look under All Printers and All Drivers. Eliminate what you do not need.

Where is Admin Tools? I find Windows Administrative Tools, not there.
In Control Panel? Where?
FYI, I got pdf to print by selecting the "Copy 1" printer.
Thanks

Print Management is part of Windows Administrative Tools. Look again to see if there.

Not there. See attached.

John, so am I stuck because there is no "Print Management" in Win 10 for this computer?
Thanks
Thanks
Open c:\windows\system32\printm anagement. msc and that will open the Print Management window
ASKER
printmanagement.msc does not exist in that folder.
Seems this must have been a customized or erroneously installed Windows 10.
Not surprising give the players who I think installed it.

It should be there and is on all my machines.
Consider doing a Windows 10 Repair Install, which will fix this and probably fix the printer problem as well. You can Keep Everything.
Go to the Media Creation Link
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Click on Upgrade to Windows 10 (even if Windows 10 is running), click on the Download button, select Open (Run) but NOT Save. It is possible you may need to go to the download location and run the program - it depends on exactly what MCL does (it changes from time to time). Allow the program to run. Allow drivers to update. Then select Keep Everything

John,
I need to discuss with the owner (she is not here right now).
I think a good plan.
FYI, the other printer issue (with my own printer) is probably connected to a serious infection I had on my computer, currently being repaired. These repair guys told me a bunch of gobblygook but I have used them for years (maybe over 10) always with good results, so we shall see. I'm trusting them for now.
They just now called & said probably done by noon today. I hope so, working like this is difficult.

It now magically works.
Thanks for the update and I was pleased to assist.
Finally I saw one post that said excess ink had caused the carriage to stick. That happened to a DeskJet 810C of mine. There was no point trying to repair it.
Your printer may be due for replacement.
