OST to PST file converter (MS Outlook)

Hi,
I have a client that has asked me to migrate all her files and data from an old desktop computer to a new one. Her old Outlook data, for some reason,is in OST format. I have asked her if the computer used to be in an office environment connected to a server and she said no but who knows.
Anyway I was wondering if anybody knows of a free program to convert ost to pst. I need pst for her new Outlook on her new computer.
Thanks

So as I understand it I can export, from the old computer, address' etc in a pst file format?
So as I understand it I can export, from the old computer, address' etc in a pst file format?

Sort answer: Yes but that pre-supposes that the contact/calendar data is in fact stored in the OST file otherwise you will need to determine in which email account or stand-alone PST data file this is information is located. You haven't provided enough info for anyone to provide a definitive answer in terms of

1 - # & types of email accounts involved
2 - # of data files configured in the old profile (.ost and .pst)
3 - Which data file in the old profile is configured as the default data file for the profile (which is where the default contact/calendar folders are located).

Very simply - if this involves only one email account configured as IMAP (using either '2013/'2016) AND there is only one data file (which would be an .ost file in this instance) THEN the contact/calendar folders will be in the .OST file labeled with "This Computer Only" (contact/calendar etc). All email folders will automatically have the data sync'd with the server when the account gets configured. It's the "This Computer Only" folders that are of concern which need to be backed up via export.

Simplest approach would be to just export the entire .ost file as a .pst file and copy that pst file over to the new computer, add it to the new Outlook profile (no need to import anything), and make that PST file the "default data file" for the profile. Once the email data is sync'd then then any duplicate email data can be deleted (remember that you cannot delete any standard Outlook "folder" (i.e. <Inbox>, <Sent Items> etc - need to delete the data within the folders vs deleting the folder itself. All other user-created email folders can be deleted directly).

Thanks people. As Karl pointed out you can just export from the old computer choosing the pst format.
Let me stress one very important thing which is that <IF> this involves an email account configured using the Exchange protocol, there is absolutely nothing that needs to be done. Everything will be sync'd when the account gets configured again on the new computer.

Hi,vlogg5

There are several methods to convert OST file to PST file.

First, Microsoft does not provide an official tool to do the conversion. However, if you can access the contents of the OST file in your Outlook, then you can perform the conversion manually, as follows:

1. Start Outlook. Make sure you can access all the contents in the OST file to be converted.
2. Create a new PST file.
3. Go to the OST file, select and copy all the contents to be converted with your mouse.
4. Go back to the new PST file, then paste all the contents into the PST file

That will do the ost 2 pst conversion.

You can also perform the conversion by exporting the contents of OST file to PST file by following the instructions at:

http://office.microsoft.com/en-001/outlook-help/export-outlook-items-to-an-outlook-data-file-pst-HA102534110.aspx

Second, if you can access the Exchange server containing the account data for the OST file, then you can use Export-Mailbox command to export the data into a PST file, similar to convert your OST file into a PST file. Below is the article about doing that:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb266964.aspx
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc535123.aspx

Third, you can try  a free OST to PST converter via Outlook VBA . Below is the article about doing that:

Hope this will help. Good Luck!
