Office 365 Sharepoint - Server 2016 Essentials
Hi,
I have a Server 2016 Essentials server which i am migrating a client to from SBS2011.
They have reasonably poor internet at the office, so what they would like is a hybrid scenario of cloud and on-premise. So, they have their company folder, which i can map to locally, stored on their Local server. Then they want those files to be accessible remotely through their Office Apps on the move - thus sharepoint is a good answer. However, what i cant seem to do is get these files synced from a shared folder or find the best way to do it? It needs to sync in the background.
I know there are programs like this: http://www.layer2solutions.com/en/community/FAQs/cloud-connector/Pages/file-system-sync-with-Office-365.aspx But surely microsoft would have something built in?!
It needs therefore to have two-way syncing.

I think both answers are viable and would split the points between the two.
To clarify why both of these answers should be selected, Cliff's answer is saying, "you can't do that" to the question asking how to sync SharePoint cloud to a server. This is correct. The OneDrive client can not installed on a server. Instead, each user can install the OneDrive client to their local machine and sync that way.
A user does not have to sync all files and the administrator can adjust permissions on a per user basis to allow permissions based on a user or group. It becomes a different way o thinking how to sync files and move away from a traditional server if you are going to use SharePoint.
You can sync SharePoint folders locally https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Sync-SharePoint-files-with-the-new-OneDrive-sync-client-6de9ede8-5b6e-4503-80b2-6190f3354a88
With the help of EE, I have tried to install Google's Drive client on a server and with the help of EE came up with an attempt to restart the sync client every time it shut down, but it never worked.
It just requires a shift of thinking and for a small office, it is easier to to manage without traditional local server once you get used to it.

Both answers are accurate.
