Nikon P900: what is this secret gadget?

On the following advertisement, I see an item in the picture that does not appear in the list of items at the bottom of the page...

Any idea what it is?

See attached image...

ALSO, I have a question about the size of the memory card(s). I see this has two at 16GB each. I also see a refurbished camera with a single 64 GB card.

Can you give me some ice how fast a 16GB card would fit with this camera? Let's say, distant shots require me the max resolution and file size per pic.

How many would a 16BG card hold?

Doubt it. The lens cap sits directly to the left of the gadget.

I'm guessing it is the memory card reader.  In your shot it has both top and bottom caps on.  Further down the page both caps are off.

You said "fast".  I think you mean size and capacity.   Now the P900 takes a variety of SD cards: SD, SDHC and SDXC.  These refer to the capacity of the cards.  You can get up to 2 Tb if you have the money for those but 16 to 64 Gb are pretty reasonable cards for normal shooting.

Cards are available in various speeds.  See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital#Speeds for lots of details.

You pay more for fast writing speeds and large capacity.

As for file size.

Well, they'll be big.  Possibly 5 - 30 Mb files.  But these are guesses because you've got jpeg in there and there will be compression going on as well.

If your file sizes are around 16 Mb you'll get at least 500 on a 16 Gb card.  This is a very rough estimation.

This http://memorycardcalculator.com/ says about 3300 for your 16 Gb card.
