ISeries 5250 Printer Session Question

Hello. I am trying to setup a 5250 Printer Session from a remotely located IBM ISeries (V7R1M0) to my local machine using an HP LaserJet M605 printer. I have setup many 5250 Printer Sessions before using other printers (HP LaserJets, Lexmark) but for some reason after I set this one up to print to the M605 printer, nothing prints. The ISeries seems to be sending the print file normally but the M605 does not print anything. I am assuming that there is some "trick" to getting this to work but I don't know what it is. I have tried the Manufacturer and Model Type paramter to other types of printers without success. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You!

Here is the DEVD for the printer:

How is the printer connected to the Windows PC?  Local USB, Network, or USB shared off of another system of USB file server?

What Windows version are you running on the PC?

What IBM i version are you running?

What IBM i Access version and Service Pack are you running?

What specific Windows print driver are you using?

Can you print a test page from the Windows machine to this printer?

Can you post the printer configuration setup from IBM i Access?

Do you get any errors on the IBM i (check writer job log, and QSYSOPR message queue) or in Windows (check Event Viewer)?

Look for hung print jobs on the IBM i outq, and in the Windows print queue when you print to this printer.

Hi, Gary:

1. Network printer (prints fine from other applications)
2. Windows 10
3. V7R1M0
4. V7R1 (unsure of the Service Pack)
5. HP LaserJet M605 PCL 6
6. Yes, and from many other machines on the network.
7. Listed in my original post
8. No error messages in ISeries log or QYSYSOPR. No errors in Event Viewer
9. No jobs holding or pending either on the ISeries or the Windows machine.

As stated, I have setup many other 5250 print sessions from the same ISeries on various network printers without any issue. It seems to be specific to this model (HP LaserJet M605) only. Very odd.

Thanks for any input.

Clay
Clay,

Does the print job actually get sent to the printer?  Put the printer on hold in windows and see if a file spools in the Windows "See What's Printing" window for the M605.

If so, does the printer have a diagnostic mode where it will dump the file received, or perhaps where you can view internal error messages that perhaps aren't getting reported back to the driver?

- Gary
If this is a network printer, why not configure it for direct printing and get IBM i Access, Windows, and Windows drivers out of the loop completely?  Only real reason to config an a 5250 emulation printer is if printer is directly attached to PC - serial or USB.

M605 isn't listed, but looks like other close relatives are.  Try configuring it as an SNMP printer.  If that doesn't work, try an LPR/LPD printer.

Hi, Gary:

When I pause the printer the job spools up. When I unpause the printer, the spool empties, but alas, nothing prints.

The printer is located in one facility in Chicago; the ISeries resides in Jacksonville. Other than assigning the printer an actual public IP I don't know how to route it from Jacksonville to our local network.

I will try changing the printer description to SNMP or LPR/LPD.

Thanks!

Clay
Oh, so printer isn't on same IP network (or connected network) with iSeries?  Does workstation connect via remote access VPN?  If so, that's going to make it more complicated.
Hi, Gary:

Yes, but not thru VPN. All access is blocked except our external, public IPs.

Hi, Gary:

Well, doggone it, simply changing to the HP Universal PCL Driver fixed it! Bravo and thanks so much!
