A large business with many domains, but only one site, which domain should be their main account?
Hi,
This question is getting asked a lot from me lately and I am using my common sense to answer it, but need other opinions please.
Basically a company might have a large company name like:
http://averylargecompanynamethatisverylong.com
They may also have registered
http://asmallname.com
http://asmallnametoo.com
Now my question is more targeting to SEO. Which domain should have their website hosted at? Where should their emails be (as you don't want people to have to remember a really long email)
So my question is, if you have many domains for your company, which is the best one for hosting the website, and obviously the site with the smaller domain name would be best for email promoting so should you host the site at the best keyword, long domain, the have a web forwarder for all other domains, and then simply set up email hosting for the smaller domain.
I am asking from a SEO and marketing point of view.
I think I know the answer, but I need a discussion to be sure.

The answer should not come from techs, rather from marketing or other appropriate departments. Searches can be optimized towards anything they select. Their choice should consider target audience expectation, clarity about the company, brand or products so people know where they are connected.
You wouldn't want a name that would be confusing about who's site they are viewing.
Lucas is spot on about calling a Jeep marketing site fcagroup.com. It would confuse people about where they have landed.

Thanks for the input. I had always been of the mind that the more keywords you have in the domain name the better, but basically you are saying the domain isn't as important, but the SEO that is a done on any site hosted anywhere....
Is that accurate??
Is that accurate??
A relevant domain name can help a little - if you are selling greeting cards then you wouldn't have a domain name that is freechipsforall.com
SEO is a hundred and one different things - the domain name is just minute part of it

The domain is important to folks that land on your site. They need to know where they are. It provides confidence they have found the 'real site and not some knockoff. This is why many companies lock up but never use domain names that could confuse their clients.
Sorry, but adding to above, the search optimization is where all the right key words and phrases will funnel towards whatever domain you select. Keep in mind those results will also result with other sites that are not yours. So searching for SUV results with much more than Jeep.com. it's the Jeep.com in the search result that tells them it's not Ford or Honda or Joe's used truck store ... who also show up in the search results.

Yes Nicholas, you are pretty much echoing what I was thinking anyway so that is comforting to know, that yes a domain name should have some relevance perhaps, but the domain name could and should be as short as possible for the company to market. All other domains they buy can then simply have web url forwarding put into place to direct them to the one main site. This would be an accurate conclusion to this discussion yes?

Great discussion
For example, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Fiat, etc are all owned by Chrysler-Fiat. This is their website:
https://www.fcagroup.com
Now, from a marketing and SEO standpoint, you would not use this domain to target people looking for a Jeep. Because nobody knows what fcagroup.com is. It would create confusion for most consumers.
Now, maybe if the brand is unknown to everyone (ie. startup) this would be less of an issue.
Too many factors play into this for me to give a blanket answer.
