chkdsk stuck at 11%

hi experts,

a have a laptop that was giving problems, so I ran a chkdsk and it's been scanning / repairing the drive now for 2hours and it's sitting at 11%. Should I let it continue , is it normal to take this long?

It is not normal for it to take that long.

I would stop that and start it again.
Did you just run chkdsk? Or did you include any options?

you can also add /v for verbosity; could give you an idea as to what stage it is working on
I'd take this drive out and place it in a USB caddy.  Attach it to another machine and then scan it with the manufacturer's hard disk util.

Let that determine the drive's fitness first.
Almost certain that this hard drive has a heap of unreadable sectors, and CHKDSK is trying valiantly to read them. You can probably hear the heads flicking around if you listen carefully. Restarting will probably  not help, but won't hurt much either.
Let it run. Depending on the drive usage and its speed, this can take hours.
what i do when i have to run diags or scans on a disk, is this:
-connect the drive to sata - NOT over usb -  since you introduce cables, interfaces and protocols which hinder the operations, and usb is much slower, especially usb 2    +   not all bootable cd's have usb drivers
-then i run the manufacturer's Quick diag at least, to Ensure the drive is operating ok (i prefer running long test)
-if this comes back ok -  i run chkdsk - which is not a disk diag - but a File system diag

***running chkdsk on a bad drive has often ruined more than repaired
Frank, you should share your solution and if you feel that some suggestions got you there (if I hear you right, some did), you should select those as solutions together with yours.
Re-reading this, I come to the conclusion that I should not have objected since you only did your own way once more and waited longer right?
Then, I am sorry for my objection. I will inform moderators, sorry again.
