GOOGLE PAGE RANK

Our website was hacked. To resolve the problem we created a new domain and website with another host and pointed the original domain to the new. Because of this we lost our Google ranking. To recover our Google ranking should we move the new website back to the old domain or do we need to contact Google to re-instate our ranking.

Cleansing hacked sites is a common occurrence.

I personally, won't have followed the procedure mentioned above, as you will indeed likely lose your rankings.

Based on what you mention above, here's my suggested steps.

1) Absolutely, work with someone who understands how to lock down sites.

I've been hosting sites since 1994 + never had a single machine or site hacked. Period.

This should never happen.

So your first step is to only run your site in a locked down runtime environment where getting hacked is near impossible.

2) Ensure your starting infrastructure is good. HTTP2 + SSL.

3) Ensure you have no duplicate content penalties, so setup the following.

a) http://site.com redirects to https://site.com
b) http://www.site.com redirects to https://site.com
c) https://www.site.com redirects to https://site.com

4) Move your site into hosting which implements #1-#3.

5) Then refer to your Webmaster Tools, er Search Console, to fix everything Google says to fix, no matter how minor it seems.

So long as you haven't changes your site URL/slug naming, your site should recover within 1-3 days.

I suggest you make no content or URL name changes on your site till after you get a clean crawl run in Search Console.
