VMware Datastore Size

A VMware datastore consists of 3 LUNs provide from SAN.

Datastore Size- 600 GB
LUN 1- 300 GB
LUN 2- 100 GB
LUN 3- 200 GB

Now if we unmount and remove the LUN 3 (200 GB) what will happen?

1. Will there be any problem with the VMs that are already running on the datastore?
2. Will the datastore size be automatically reduce to 400 GB?
3. Is there any recommendation to safely unallocated or unmount the LUN?

You will have one datastore less!

1. You will not be able to delete or unmount it, if it's in USE!

2. No.

3. Yes, you should mask it first!

@Andrew I think cbinayak create a datastore with multiple vmfs extents

If this is the case (generally a bad idea)
remove first lun will destroy the datastore,
remove other lun will impact all vmachine that have at least one block on the lun

Check the link for reference:

Well if you've created a datastore using extents, this is very bad! not recommended!

if you remove a LUN it will all blow-up in your face, and the VMs will all go offline, and the datastore corrupted!

Thank you for your valuable suggestions. However, I am confused about the statement you mentioned- "Well if you've created a datastore using extents, this is very bad! not recommended!"

If I need to extend an existing datastore of 2TB size to 8TB, is it not advisable to extend that datastore by assgining another 3 LUNs of 2 TB each?

Not really, as if you lose one LUN then the whole datastore is lost
