Backing up Exchange Server (no-DAG) during the mailbox migration ?

Hi All,

What’s the impact when taking the backup of Exchange Server (no DAG) with Veeam (VSS aware or Application-Aware Processing enabled) when the server is currently running on Circular logging and the mailbox is being migrated from one server to another ?
More info about the application aware: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backup/vsphere/backup_job_vss_application_vm.html?ver=95

The reason I ask this question is that the migration of the 2TB+ mailbox database is quite slow about 5 GB per hours, which is about 17 days with no backup running on the email server.

Any help and comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

When setting up DAG from this Exchange mailbox server with another node, do I need to turn off Circular Logging or keep it running?

OK, so in this case does the transaction log drives can grow bigger during the DAG replication or setup between the two nodes ?

The Circular logging was enabled since I was migrating it from the old Exchange MBX VM.

If your backup is happening regularly then monitor the growth of your log drive, it should truncate your logs when backup is completed. You can disable it if you want.
Ah I see,
so I will still enable the Circular logging on both DAG node member to avoid the disk space filling up.

From what I understand, when using DAG is that both Database and the transaction log must be on the same drive, cannot be separated.
Hi Amit,

When doing the DAG, I assume the backup can be taken from both Exchange mailbox VMs not just one only like in the Exchange 2007 CCR ?

Hi Amit,

Thanks for the quick reply.

in this case if I already configure the DAG, does turning off and turning on the circular logging requires me to dismount the mailbox DB on each node ?

OK, so to minimise the number of mailbox outage, I assume I can just disable the circular logging after the DAG has been completely configured on my two nodes.

Mounting & dismounting passive mailbox database should not cause any outage I assume.
