Windows server 2012 R2 permissions on services get Access denied

Our new server is having security issues.  I got a message that it couldn't be refreshed because event viewer service wasn't started.  I tried to start it manually and got the attached error.  I tried to change the log on permissions, but they are grayed out.

How do I fix this

Which account are you logged in with? Is your own or a local Administrator account? You need local admin rights to start services.

already there.  Also I just noticed I can't activate it either.  I've tried several MAK keys we have.

Do you have any policy applied on this server?
Run gpresult /H gp.html and share the result.
it flashes very fast on the screen.  I think it said access denied.  I ran gpresult /r and it also will not display.
I have a strong feeling this install of Win 2012 is corrupt.  We've activated it twice and now it states not activated

worth a try
Still getting access denied after removing it from the domain and rebooting.  Also all of the properties are unknown.

Microsoft wanted $499 to trouble shoot the Activation.  I'm going to do a fresh installation of 2012 R2
