Enabling CAS role on current mailbox server ?

Hi All,

My newly running Exchange mailbox server 2013 SP1 is now running fine after migrating from multi roles Exchange 2013 SP1 CAS- MBX running on Windows 2008 R2.

So what's the step so I can decommission this old Windows Server 2008 R2 without impacting the email flow for all users during the business hours ?

Do I need to prepare anything to do after hours ?

Hi MAS,
Thank you for the Quick reply,

Why do I need to split the CAS role and the mailbox role when the old server running 2008 R2 is capable of mixing both roles CAS & MBX ?

My plan is to do the DAG next to reduce the number of servers running.

As for the arbitration mailbox move, does it have to be on the same server or into the same mailbox database ?

I will need to decommissioned this old Windows Server 2008 R2 since someone installs Bitlocker on the Exchange mailbox database.

So how can I install or enable the CAS role on the new Exchange Server 2013 SP1 on Windows 2012 R2 with no downtime or reboot ?
The existing old server 2008R2 CAS-MBX will still be running while I am still finding the way to enable the CAS role safely with no mailbox downtime or data loss.

Ok I will try to do that on the new 2012 R2 server running the mailbox server role now.

I assume that I just need to run the setup.com file as usual then no data loss or email flow issues with two new CAS under same AD site (the new 2012 R2 server is now running all production mailboxes 1200+).

Thanks MAS,

I assume that there is no firewall is required apart from TCP/443 and TCP/25 port to the firewall in the DMZ from the CAS-MBX SERVER ?

Do I need to reboot the server or perform AD schema extension ?
Hi MAS,

So after the CAS server has been installed or added properly, I just need to adjust the below script result to match the output which is all OWA.domain.com:

From the Old Server execute below command from EMS:
Get-ActiveSyncVirtualDirectory | fl internalurl,externalurl
Get-AutoDiscoverVirtualDirectory | fl internalurl,externalurl
Get-ECPVirtualDirectory | fl internalurl,externalurl
Get-OabVirtualDirectory | fl internalurl,externalurl
Get-WebServicesVirtualDirectory | fl internalurl,externalurl

Great, that does make sense.

And regarding the Autodiscover, not sure why is it BLank, is that normal?

The double up of the result is because I got two existing CAS server already running.
Do I also need to execute the below script from the new server:

get-clientaccessserver | set-clientaccessserver -autodiscoverserviceinternaluri "https://autodiscover.domain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml"

to match the SSL certificate I imported to the server ?

Many thanks for the detailed assistance in this matter.
Glad to know my posts helped you. My pleasure.
Hi,
After enabling or installing the CAS role, do I need to manually create the Receive Connectors to be the same like the existing MBX-CAS server role ?
