Hi John,
It's good news that you have PP14.5, but do you have Patch 1 installed? If not, this EE article explains how to get it (free):
How to install the Patch 1 update for PaperPort 14.5

It's important to note that PP14.5/Patch1 is the only W10-compliant version of PP, as shown in this Nuance KB article:
Nuance PDF product support for Windows 10

There are some Tips in this EE article that may help you with PP14 in W10:
PaperPort 14 in Windows 10 - A First Look

All of that said, the PP Image Printer is a particularly problematic piece of software, especially in W10. I just finished an upgrade of eight computers for a client to PP14.5Pro/Patch1, and on two of the eight, the PP Image Printer would not install. Fortunately, the ScanSoft PDF Create printer did install, and while there are some differences between the two printers, I was able to configure ScanSoft PDF Create in a manner that the client is happy with (basically, prompt-less printing — it appears in a PP folder with no user intervention required). See if your Devices and Printers has ScanSoft PDF Create and/or DocuCom PDF (they're the same print driver, just different names).

One other thing. If you have scanning problems with PP14 in W10, read this EE article for a tool that may help (free):

Hi John,
Thanks for the update. Going with PP14 Professional is a good idea. But keep in mind that the version from Amazon is 14.0. So you'll want to do this:

(1) Don't even install the copy from Amazon. Simply use its serial number to install PP14.5, as discussed in this EE article:
PaperPort 14 - Free Upgrade to Version 14.5

(2) Install the Patch1 (free), as discussed in this EE article:
How to install the Patch 1 update for PaperPort 14.5

(3) Install the PP14 Scanner Connection Tool (free), as discussed in this EE article:
PaperPort 14 Scanner Connection Tool - Fix Scanning Problems in PaperPort 14

(4) Read this EE article for some Tips about using PP14 in W10:
PaperPort 14 in Windows 10 - A First Look

If you run into a problem with the PP Image Printer, my advice is to use the ScanSoft PDF Create print driver (aka DocuCom PDF), as discussed in my #a42199499 post above. I'll be happy to help you configure that if you need it, but it's pretty straightforward — right-click on it in Devices and Printers, then set the options in the General tab and the PDF Settings tab to suit you. I like to set it to save the file in a specific folder, auto-name it, and add a trailing number to the file name if it already exists. That way, it is prompt-less printing — you click Print and it shows up in the specified folder (but not in the currently open folder on the PP desktop, as the PP Image Printer does). Regards, Joe

Hi Joe,

Many thanks for your advice. Will use only the serial number from Amazon copy and will keep you posted after the installation.

Should I encounter any problems with the installation of EE copy ( 14.5 )then will contact you.

After you've uninstalled your current PP and before you install the downloaded PP14.5, look in Control Panel>Programs and Features, and make sure that an old PaperPort Image Printer (or PaperPort Image Printer 64-bit) is not in there — if it is, uninstall it right from there.

Hi Joe,

Received PaperPort 14 Professionnal earlier today and installed program with the free upgrade version 14.5 together with Patch 1 and it worked OK. I also have PP printer working OK.
After scanning a document and try to open it I receive a Windows Application Error: "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022) click OK to close application. Any clue how to correct that issue?

I also have another problem. When I reboot or start the computer, PP14.5 changes display resolution from 1920 X 1080 (recommended) to the lowest (800 X 600). How to fix that issue?

Re the scanning problem, did you install the (free) PP14 Scanner Connection Tool, as mentioned above and explained in my EE article:
PaperPort 14 Scanner Connection Tool - Fix Scanning Problems in PaperPort 14

If not, that's my first suggestion. Second suggestion is to make sure you have the latest drivers for your scanner — and the correct ones for your version and bit-level of Windows. I have found that PP is very sensitive to the scanning drivers. Have you tried it with all drivers — ISIS? TWAIN? WIA? WIA2? Btw, what scanner do you have (make and model, please)?

Re the display resolution, that's a new one on me! I'll do some research on it, but I have never seen that before — or even heard of it, Regards, Joe

Hi  Joe,
Just installed the scanner connection tool and it seems to work OK now. No more Windows Application Errors.
The only problem which persists is the resolution change after a reboot or at start. It's really annoying because I have to go to Display Setting and change  setting back to 1920 X 1080.  Any clue to correct that issue.

I'm glad that the Scanner Connection Tool fixed the scanning problem. As I mentioned before, I've never heard of that screen resolution problem and find it hard to believe that PaperPort is doing it — I suspect something else in the W10 environment is the culprit, such as the display driver, although I suppose it could be PP. I don't have a clue on this one, but as I said in my last post, I'll do some research on it.

What makes you think that PP14.5 is the one doing that?

Author

Commented:
Hi Joe,

Because it's the only program that causes the problem. I think there must be a conflict with Win 10 and PP14.5 .  Should I start any other program Win 10 is OK

For the "Windows - Application Error" I found out that it will happen only when I try to open documents with  Acrobat.  If I use Explorer or Word nothing.

I'm confused by your comments, "When I reboot or start the computer..." and "Because it's the only program that causes the problem."

Does the problem happen when you reboot/start the computer or when you run PaperPort?

Author

Commented:
Sorry for the confusion. Yes the problem happens only at reboot/start.

After starting the computer then PP14 will cause the problem when I open it. After I set display resolution back to normal (1920X 1080) same problem will not reoccur. I could open and close PP14 and it will run OK.

For the Win error with Acrobat it's always there

To make sure I'm understanding these two problems:

(1) The first time that PaperPort runs after the computer boots, it changes the display resolution from 1920x1080 to 800x600. After you set it back to 1920x1080, you can run and exit PaperPort multiple times and it does not change the resolution.

(2) PaperPort does not cause the "Windows - Application Error" issue. Acrobat causes it. So this is not a PaperPort problem.

Are those statements correct?

Author

Commented:
Hi Joe,

Yes it is correct for #1 but same issue will repeat after every boot/restart.

For #2 do you have an idea how to solve that issue with Acrobat (Adobe)?

I've never seen that issue with Adobe Acrobat and, off the top of my head, don't know how to resolve it. But I suggest that we keep this question about the PaperPort issue and that you post a new question with the Acrobat issue. Regards, Joe

Hi Joe,

Thanks for your advice about the Acrobat issue.

What about the display setting issue after each reboot/restart?

I have never seen that problem before — never even heard of it. I'll do some research on it and will post back here with the results of my research. I can't possibly test any potential solutions myself, because I never have the problem, but I'll pass along any potential solutions for you to try. Regards, Joe

Is your W10 32-bit or 64-bit? Is it Home or Pro?

Since it is a PaperPort only issue, that suggests the problem may be in its shortcut's parameters. Check the shortcut that you're using to launch PaperPort and make sure that there are no boxes ticked in the Compatibility tab. On a W10 Pro 64-bit system, it should look like this:

PP14.5Pro-Patch1 shortcut W10 Pro 64-bit
All of the boxes should be un-ticked. Regards, Joe

This question has evolved into three questions. The initial question is about the PaperPort Image Printer. Then a second question was raised about a completely different problem — a "Windows - Application Error" created by Adobe Acrobat. Then a third question was raised about PaperPort changing the display resolution from 1920x1080 to 800x600.

I suggest the following resolution for this question: (1) close it by accepting the posts that solved the original question about the PaperPort Image Printer; (2) ignore the Adobe Acrobat question, since the asker informed me via PM that their IT technician has solved this problem (and it is unrelated to PaperPort); (3) recommend that the asker post a new question with the third problem (PaperPort changing the display resolution). Thus, I selected the posts that solved the original question. Regards, Joe
