Moving a file server

I'm in the process of moving my file server from a 2008 r2 machine to a 2012 virtual machine.  My question is about impact to my users.  Currently all users are mapped to a personal folder via AD profiles \\machinename\users\username and then I have a shortcut on the desktop which is mapped to the same server but its a share for everyone with various access to folders same thing \\machinename\sharename.  I am planning on renaming the Virtual server to the name of the current file server and giving it the same IP.  What will my impact be to the users?  Will the current mappings still work?

If permissions of files, permissions on shares, Machine Name, and IP Address are ALL the same on your new virtual server, there should be no impact or loss of service.

However, I would ask all users to logout and turn off their PCs before you complete the changes, so none are connected to the old servers shares.

OK I"m doing this 1st thing tomorrow - I'll update you then. Thx.
I moved the server but the mappings are not working.  Server has the same name and the same IP. Any suggestions?
what errors do you get?

are the shares in place, permissions ?

so if you do this...

 \\machinename\sharename

it fails ?
It still appears to be pointing to the old server even though I've changed the name, changed the IP and stopped the sharing on everything.
what's pointing, as the name and IP Address are the same, and the old server is off ?

e.g. old server is new server!
Yes but now I'm getting the following...  Windows can not access servername\share
can you ping the server by servername ?

can you ping the server by IP Address ?

can you connect to sharename by IP Address ?

can you connect to sharename by servername ?

did you set the shares on the server servername ?
Yes I can ping.  I did a robocopy /copyall /mir and it copied everything as it was.  I can ping the server by name.  I can not connect to the shares by IP or share name.
is that all you did on this new server ?

nothing else ?
That's correct.

I'm looking in to that now - thanks I'll let you know
IS there a command to disable inheritance on folders within a share?
You where 100% correct as soon as I shared the folders and fixed the permissions everything was up and running again
