Is Dropbox a good backup ? If incremental is chosen

1tb for 100 euro and I like the interface

But a mate got an encryption Virus and after a sync that's all he was left with - was .bac7 encrypted files in Dropbox

Would keep versions help - it's an option in Dropbox or once a file is deleted or renamed the  incremented back up file will be gone as well?

Thanks

A usb hard drive is ok provided it's kept disconnected between encryption viruses

I suppose it's failing it's a sync and not a backup

Two locations mirrored for good or in the case of an encryption virus for bad !

Copying encrypted files to Dropbox won't help anything. I don't think there is any guarantee it won't spread but I do not know for certain.

Dropbox is always connected as well.

I'm onto drop box sales now - they have stoped answering me my direct question

Their failing is that if a file was bla.doc and it's attacked and renamed bla.crypto and then a sync happens you are fcuked

You can get deleted files back
But a renamed one is a weakness for Dropbox

It's a sync - not a backup

I may be possible to roll back the entire account to a particular date if you have a certain plan thought

But I'm not certain which plans and if it is def possible

Ok some great info ....

Need a quick answer to this .....

I'm not very Famaliar with drop box

So dropping a folder e.g. My docs into Dropbox folder doesn't move the folder it just adds a short cut to the drop box folder as a pointer to sync it - correct ?

Thanks
Depends HOW you drop it ... are you on OSX or Windows?
On OSX  your Documents folder in your Home folder is a system-specific folder and shouldn't be moved around willy-nilly.
Creating a normal alias or shortcut won't work .. you have to create a SYMLINK to the Documents folder and place inside the Dropbpx folder .. then changes to Documents will be sync'd to Dropbox

On Windows you can create folders inside your Dropbox folder and re-locate the default locations to these folders

In neither case is it a simple drag & drop

Windows

What happens if I drop the my docs into drop box ?

Does the my docs local location change ?
No. the documents sync to all computers. So you will have the documents in Drop Box and also in Windows.
