MS Intellipoint Pro mouse right-click not working on XP
All,
Have an XP w/ SP3, working fine for years. Suddenly mouse right click does nothing.
Tried system restore - no luck.
Tried reinstalling driver from CD, wouldn't install - says there's a newer driver installed & exits.
Tried Roll back - says no backup driver found.
Tried Uninstalling driver, then reinstalling - got same error message as above (so I'm guessing it wasn't REALLY removed)?
Bought a replacement mouse - same model - same problem.
Borrowed another brand of mouse, works fine.
Client wants the old style mouse because in has magnify feature built in. Plus he spent $$$ on the new replacement.
Must get the MS mouse working correctly, if at all possible.
So I think it's in the software, but I'm open for any serious suggestions - except for upgrade XP, or use another model mouse.
Thank you,
Russ

I used the borrowed mouse that uses WIFI connection to use as a pointing device while trying to install the intellipoint pro mouse.
Yes, it was unplugged.

Yes, it was unplugged.
Russ
Is it a USB mouse ?
ASKER
Yes
Uninstall the intellipoint pro mouse and detach it.
Disconnect any USB device from PC.
use touch pad toOpen Device Manager.
Double-click Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand the list.
Right-click the first USB Root Hub in the list, then select Uninstall. Click OK to confirm.
Continue uninstalling all USB Root Hubs listed.
Close Device Manager and restart the computer.
Install the intellipoint pro mouse.
Conect it to USB port.

This is an XP Desktop, no touchpad available, but otherwise I'll try as you suggest tonight.
I'll answer back with results.

try with another user account - does it work then?
also test in safe mode

Tried all suggestions - nothing.
Not Safe Mode, not different user, not uninstall root hubs - Nothing.
Could it be Virus / Malware?
Since Rollback won't work can I used any software & manually delete ALL mouse software?
If possible, anyone know what files to delete?
Thanks,
Russ

In the Mouse Properties can you redefine right click and apply the settings.
try runnning sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt
ASKER
I've redefined wheel click to be right click.
Don't want that to be permanent solution because both old & new mouse can't be broken out of the box.
What is sfc? Is it organic to XP? Will it run on XP?
Tried search&destroy won't run on XP..

Try to redefine right click one more time and Retest.
how to use sfc : http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html SFC use in XP
ASKER
redefined that works, but awkward for permanent fix.
sfc seems to have too many "what if's / exceptions" not comfortable trying it.
Thinking of using a Logitech Gaming mouse, if no one knows a real solid solution.

Thinking of using a Logitech Gaming mouse,
That's a good idea.

Don't like to give up. Should be able to fix the problem
iwould backup and do a fresh install - his OS is running for many years, and probably corrupt
doing this will give him a fresh OS - a bit faster too - and with all latest drivers

I understand how this might help corruption problem, but I don't want to introduce any new drivers, do I? That seems like a can of worms situation.
>> but I don't want to introduce any new drivers << why not? most people just like having the latest
the link to worms is obscure

This is XP, hasn't been supported in years. Have the same hardware for past 10 years. Don't want to introduce any changes.
In the US, if you say you've "opened a can of worms" it means you've potentially have a real mess on your hands (a serious problem).
