Unlock a Locked Word Document in SharePoint 2013

Is there a non-code way to unlock a locked Word document in SharePoint 2013?

I went into "Library Settings - Version Settings" and turned off the Check-Out option/functionality but it is not Grayed out on the Ribbon. Why would that be?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can override a checkout if you are a site owner or higher. In the document library, go to the document and click on the arrow next to the file. There you will see the option to override the check out.

Be careful - if you are not the owner of the file, you will return the file to the last saved status. That means, if the owner of the file has not saved their work, it may get lost when you override the checkout.

Hope that helps...

Although I appreciate the input, that isn't the scenario I am experiencing.

I am the Admin, so I have the proper permissions to perform a checkout over ride.

I disabled Checkout so multiple users could access the document simultaneously.

But other users are currently seeing that the document is "Locked" by another user.

But it does not say the document is checked out and therefore there is no option to override either.

I just need a way to unlock this and hopefully prevent reoccurrence.

Thanks again

An outstanding reply. I came to the same conclusion that it is a Word issue and the resolve was just as you said. Well done sir. Thank you.
Thanks, glad that helped!
