Loud fan in hp proliant dl380p gen8

I have a hp proliant dl380p gen8 server. The fan has been very loud for a couple days. I was hoping to boot into a diagnostic utility to run hardware tests.  I thought I was supposed to boot into intelligent provisioning to get to the diagnostic tests.  I cant boot into intelligent provisiong though.  I downloaded an update ISO from hp for IP. I booted from the dvd and attempted to update but got an error message that said iLO unresponsive - unable to continue.    Should I be booting into IP to run diagnostic tests?  I dont use iLO. Is IP dependent on iLO?

Fans tend to be loud for two primary reasons.

1) Something is overheating + driving your fan to max. (Rare)

2) You have a fan bearing going out. (Common)

Best to just order a replacement fan + replace it. Cost you a few dollars.

If this doesn't fix the problem then figure out what the fan is suppose to be cooling + look to replacing that component.

Is you look at temperatures with a fan that's on the edge, the fan's capacity to move air may have already been reduced considerably to a wobbly bearing, so just checking temps may or may not tell you anything.

Another trick is to take open up your machine + point a high speed fan/blower across your entire chassis.

If the fan noise disappears (fan spins down), likely you have some component on the edge.

Also, be sure to vacuum all the dust out of your system. Many a time simply cleaning out dust bunnies fixes over heating problems.
Hello,

Fans in that type of server at hot swappable, which means you can remove them while the server is running.  Open the case and see if you can find which fan is making the noise.  Good thing is to clean the inside of the server for any dust that has accumulated.

Remove the noisy fan and clean it with some compressed air.  Gently hold the fins of the fan while using the compressed air.  The air can break off a fin.  You can then spin the fan manually to see if it is working correctly.  if it doesn't spin easily, then the bearing is failing.  Order a new fan or check inside your server if there are any fans that aren't in use.   Swap the two fans around until your new have arrives.  It always good to have extra fans on hand.

Here is some info on removing the fan from your server.

if the above does not help - a BIOS update may help

I opened it up. It seems the whole row of fans is running at full speed. I reseated all of the ram and riser cards.  The issue persists. The firmware was updated a few months ago.

iLO boards I see seem very cheap + being as cheap as they are, likely be cheaper to replace the board than attempt a repair.
