Circular logging and the DAG impact on Exchange Server 2013 ?

Hi People,

I'm trying to achieve below with no downtime:

DISABLE Circular Logging
Configure DAG
Allow Database Replication

I've got 2x Exchange Server 2013 Standard Edition SP1 in the two different AD sites:

AD Site: Default-First-Site-Name
PRODMBX20-VM
C:\ 200 GB - OS
P:\ 100 GB - Page File Drive
D:\ 700 GB - PRODMBX20-VM-DB01 [PRIMARY]
E:\ 700 GB - PRODMBX20-VM-DB02 [PRIMARY]

F:\ 700 GB - PRODMBX30-VM-DB01 [SECONDARY]
G:\ 700 GB - PRODMBX30-VM-DB02 [SECONDARY]

AD Site: Head Office
PRODMBX30-VM
C:\ 200 GB - OS
P:\ 100 GB - Page File Drive
F:\ 700 GB - PRODMBX30-VM-DB01 [PRIMARY]
G:\ 700 GB - PRODMBX30-VM-DB02 [PRIMARY]

D:\ 700 GB - PRODMBX20-VM-DB01 [SECONDARY]
E:\ 700 GB - PRODMBX20-VM-DB02 [SECONDARY]

The two mailboxes server will be replicating to each other, so my question is:

1. Can I disable the circular logging after the DAG has been configured on both servers and all mailboxes database successfully replicated?
2. Do I need to disable the circular logging first and then setup the DAG which cause the unwanted outage to the users?
3. Does the DAG can also running fine even with Circular Logging enabled?

It's not recommended to have circular logging enabled however if you want to have it enabled there is no as such issues with DAG

Hi Pradeep,

It is just enabled in:

PRODMBX20-VM
C:\ 200 GB - OS
P:\ 100 GB - Page File Drive
D:\ 700 GB - PRODMBX20-VM-DB01 [PRIMARY]
E:\ 700 GB - PRODMBX20-VM-DB02 [PRIMARY]

Reading this: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn756374%28v=exchg.150%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396 It doesn't say that it requires downtime or dismounting ?
Hey,

You can refer https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/scottschnoll/2011/06/27/circular-logging-and-mailbox-database-copies/

will give yo more understanding about it configuring the circular logging in DAG

About the article https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn756374%28v=exchg.150%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396, its talking about the Single DB which is not in DAG and it does ask to dismount it below are the steps I copied form this article

Use the EAC to configure circular logging for a database
In the EAC, go to Servers > databases.
Select the mailbox database you want to configure and click Edit icon.
Check or uncheck the Enable circular logging checkbox, and then click save.
If a dismount and mount operation are required, a warning message will appear. Click OK to close the warning message.
To dismount the database, click More More Options Icon, and then click Dismount. Click yes when the warning message appears.
To mount the database, click More More Options Icon, and then click Mount. Click yes when the warning message appears.
Here is what you looking  for(Copied from the blog I shared to you)

when you add the first passive copy of a database or remove the last passive copy of a database, circular logging (JET or CRCL) must be disabled.

I plan to create DAG, but the existing mailbox DB already running Circular Logging.

So I wonder if I should turn it off or keep it running, and then turn it off after DAG is already running.
Yes!!  if want to have CL enabled then this DB in question has to be disabled first for CL, once you add the DB copies (post creation of your DAG) then you can re-enable the CL.
You would
Put your DB's at high risk if you are enabling the circular logging losing a single los means hard repair which will result in to data loss
thanks all !
