asked on

computers and servers not getting windows updates

Recently when we add a new computer to our network and try to do the windows updates we get the error 8024402c.   The computer is not added to the domain yet so it's not a GPO problem.  We also noticed that the Windows Server 2008 R2 have the exact same problem.

The Win 2012 R2 servers are getting updates fine.

The new computers have nothing installed on them yet.  e.g. no anti-virus, etc.

we get the error 8024402c.

Common error saying it needs to try again.

As a first step, set up to run Auto Updates, and allow to run Overnight before making other changes.

Note: Before making any serious changes to your system you should wait for two or three days to see if the error goes away on its own.
Hi,

Locate the UseWUServer in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windowsupdate\AU and reset the value from 1 to 0, then restart the PC and try.

Thanks,
Abhi...
Make sure you can reverse registry changes or, better, wait a bit.

on the 2008 R2 server the last time it was able to check for updates was 6/8.  So it's been happening for a while.  We just noticed it.

@Abhi: Even if OP is referring to WSUS, the correct keys are something like this below. Why enable WSUS without specifying the server, that is what UseWUServer value does on its own.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"WUServer"="http://xxx:8530"
"WUStatusServer"="http://xxx:8530"
"ElevateNonAdmins"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
"AUOptions"=dword:00000005
"AutoInstallMinorUpdates"=dword:00000001
"NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000000
"UseWUServer"=dword:00000001

Open in new window

Correct. I have just checked the path in a non-domain Pc in my test network. AU is only needed if wsus server setup configured, not a standalone one.
It was the external firewall. Thank you
