Verizon/AOL email access unreliable through AT&T Wireless network - a fix?

Is it impractical to use Verizon/AOL email from a SmartPhone through the AT&T cellular network, and do I therefore need to abandon my verizon.net email account?

Background:

I have two main email accounts - @verizon.net and @gmail.com. Since Verizon ported me over to AOL (while maintaining my verizon.net address) accessing my verizon.net email with my phone is problematic through a cellular connection. This was the case when I was an AT&T customer and is still the case when I am a Consumer Cellular customer accessing the AT&T network.

Frequently, the verizon.net email frequently cannot make the connection to the server from my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 phone using the cellular connection. This may happen a few times or even 20 times, and then a connection is made and email is received and sent.

The Verizon.net email works fine on the same phone through WiFi. The Gmail account works fine through both WiFi and cellular. Both accounts work fine through my Windows desktop computer.

The problem happened with the email account configured as POP3 and still occurs with the account reconfigured as IMAP. I use an SSL connection although I had the same problem using no encryption.

I see many mentions of this on the web. It seems widely attributed to incompatibilities between the AT&T, especially when accessed through a bulk provider such as Consumer Cellular, and AOL.

Is this the case? Is my only practical choice to stop using the verizon.net email address?

Thanks, Allen. Your explanation makes sense. It is consistent with my observation that while frequently no connection is made, sometimes the connection does occur. Although a question comes to mind:

Does AOL/Verizon see the request differently when it comes through my cellular connection versus the phone's WiFi or my home computer's hardwired Internet connection? The problem has only occurred on the cellular connection. Then again, the home Internet connection is Verizon FIOS so maybe AOL made sure to have sufficient capacity on its connections to the FIOS network.

I realize this question may have no known answer: Any idea if I should wait for AOL to fix their capacity problem versus incur the hassle of switching email providers?

Pete,

I suspect the capacity is different at different demarc points, and may even vary be region.

I'd give them a little time to fix, before jumping ship unless you don't need/want multiple email identities.
