Windows Media center will not start

The computer is an HP z210 running Windows 7 pro.

Each time I start Windows Media Center , the message;
Windows Media Center has stopped working

I click on the “check online for a solution”  and nothing happens.

What I have done:
- Removed and reinstalled Windows Media Center using appwiz.cpl
- Tried to rebuild the Media center store using
 %systemroot%\ehome\mcupdate.exe

That failed.

Booted the system using the “clean boot” procedure (msconfig).  Windows Media center would not start.

The detailed error message is:

Microsoft has NOT stopped supporting media center because it is a component of Windows editions that are still supported.  HOWEVER, you'd likely have to pay for that support and it is true that it is no longer distributed with current versions of Windows

I ran SFC /SCANNOW from an admin command prompt, it said there were no problems.

You wrote:
>>try installing Media Center again. <<  I interpreted this to mean run appwiz.cpl and remove and reinstall Windows Media Center .  I did this, it still does not work.

I don’t have the original Windows disks for this HP z210.  I did make a full image backup using Windows 7 when I received the computer (some years ago).  I tried restoring this image and it will restore.  When I try to log in it asks for a password .  I entered the administrator password and it was not accepted.

I mention this because if you decide the only recourse is to reinstall Windows, you’ll understand my situation.

I vaugly recall this z210 was part of a Windows domain ( I think) when the Windows image was created.  After restoring the  Windows image there is no way I know of to type in a command like donhome\administrator.

I do have an authentic Windows 7 SP1 pro x64 disk.  It says it is intended for preinstallation on a hard drive of the fully assembled computer system, using the OEM pre-installation tools (whatever that means).

I don’t know how this would affect the existing Windows 7 installation on the z210.

What do I do now to get Windows Media Center to run?
Is there any way to get the HP Recovery Media for your machine. I have a Windows 7 Po Virtual Machine here that I created from Window 7 Pro 64-bit Retail DVD and it does not have Media Center.

So either (1) get Microsoft to assist you as suggested above, or (2) get the HP Recovery Media.

Hello Lee:
I know nothing about the google "utilman trick" .  I will research this at a later date.  Thanks for the informaton.

I found the recovery disks for the z210.  I looked at my notes from the last time I tried to use these disks.  My notes indicate the disks did not work.

So I tried them again.  They worked this time.  Windows 7 has been reinstalled.  I have laboriously reapplied all the drivers  (HP has many).  Now 134 updates are being applied.

So, I will try executing Windows Media Center tomorrow.

I’ll post more then.
I mean SEARCH using GOOGLE for "utilman trick" - you will find many links with instructions for using it.

Then read over this for how to patch more quickly.

I have successfully reinstalled Windows 7.  Windows Media Center now works.
This has been a lot of work; hope I don’t have to do this again.

Thanks for all your help.
You are very welcome and I was happy to help you
