Old Windows Server Backup Copies

Dear Experts,
I am running Windows Server Backup on WS 2016, and am running out of storage.
I have found some articles to utilize command "wbadmin" such as:

wbadmin delete systemstatebackup -version: 05/04/2015-18:25 -backupTarget: G:

My problem is, I don't know what the backupTarget drive is.  It does not show up in Windows Explorer, when I look into Backup Scheduler, it has a Name, but it is not a drive letter.  (It says "XXCompany 2017_04_06 16:03 Disk 01" as Destination Name.

How can I manage the backup storage space?  Please advise.

you should be able to click on backup schedule and walk through the wizard as if you were going to modify the job till you get to the specify destination type then click next.. the next screen should show you the target.
then just cancel
Use the recover tool, it will tell you where the backups might be, look at your wbadmin scheduled backups

The confusing part, you are running out of space on the same server or another server?
If the location where you are running out of space contains backups,
The target would be the \\servername\sharename that on the server using net share will reveal the list of defined shares and their corresponding physical path.

Dear Robert, thank you for a quick response.  Yes, when I click through the Backup Scheduler Wizard, the destination shows up as "XXCompany 2017_04_06 16:03 Disk 01", and no drive letter, such as G:.

Dear arnold, thank you for a quick response.  This is one server, and I set up the backup using a 2TB USB external HDD, which is full.
I did not set up to backup on the same server.  When I go through recover tool, the drive does not show up.  The only drives I can see are the local drives, C, D (DVD) and E (Data).  But when I go through the Computer Management, "XXCompany 2017_04_06 16:03 Disk 01" shows up as Disk 1.  I just cannot get to it.
Go through the recover process to see the backups that you have on the USB external device.

Dear arnold.

When I go through the recover process, I do see the backups, it shows up as "XXCompany 2017_04_06 16:03 Disk 01".  How do I delete some of the backup copies on that disk?   The wizard will walk through and eventually gets me to Select items to Recover.  I just want to delete some older copies.  I can see that the backup copies go back to 5/12, and every day from then.
try the following: Wbadmin get versions
the output of that usually includes the backup location. (which should be the target.)

you can also use wbadmin get versions -backuptarget:"Enter drive letter of USB drive" to see if it will work just pointing it to the folder on the USB drive.

Dear Robert,

I attached the screenshot of Command prompt when I run "wbadmin get versions" .  As you can see, the disk is coming up as ?, so I don't know how to address it.

it appears your backups were run using a mounted volume.

you should be able to use the \\?\volume{xxxx} as the target.
just run mountvol to check that the volume matches. (it will also tell you the drive letter associated with the mount)
They are all going to the USB drive..
Note it is the same Volume-guid.

The backups ate images of the OS.....

Cpio py the volume GUID and use it to delete the backup stance you do not need/want.
Believe it or not, this is a non-issue. Windows backup will make sure that it deletes old backups when it runs out of space to create new backups - automatically. At least it should. You can try by creating a backup now and you'll see it will run although there should not be enough space.

Dear Robert,

I ran mountvol, and saw that there are 2 \\?\volume{xxxx}, which was followed with "NO MOUNT POINTS".  I am starting to think that when I first set up the Server Backup using Wizard, I should have assigned a drive name, but it never requested it.

Dear arnold,

I copied the volume name in Run, and was able to get to the backup.  However, unlike what I expected, the backup is bundled in one, I do not have separate copies to delete, everything has the latest date.

Dear McKnife,

Since this is a backup that is supposed to run every night, after failing day before, it did run last night and succeeded as you suggested.  Does this mean that it takes one failure, then start to delete the older batch so that I do not have to keep deleting the older copies?  (That is what I read that it is supposed to do, but since it failed once with an error saying not enough storage, I assumed it is not working that way)

Dear McKnife,  The error message was "Not enough storage space", but when I checked the storage space today, there were more than 75% free, so I believe it is starting to delete the older versions.  I will start a new scheduled task and will use -keepversions parameter.  Thank you for your guidance.

Dear Robert and arnold, I appreciate your advises, I believe I understand the server backup much more thoroughly.  Thank you.
as mknife pointed out, your USB external backup, are you imaging the entire system?
See whether the space consumed on the backup is the cumulative size of the used data on the system excluding USB....

Was there an output of backup list that had four entries, did not pay close enough attention whether they were c, e, f volumes, or different instances of bavkuo, i.e. Week 1, week 2, week 3.....

Dear arnold,

There was no indication that it was separated into different instances.  I did see error logs under different dates, but that was all.
4 folders, Backup 2017-07-26 010003, which includes 4 hard dis images all dated yesterday, and many XML files, Catalog folders with 2 files dates yesterday, Logs folder with error logs from various dates, and SPPMetadataCache folder which was empty.
I could not see anything that allows me to choose different backup copies from different date.
that is what I said, I saw four references, did not look closely whether these were distinct or a single backup of multiple volumes on the server.
