Exchange 2010: Send Connectors with multiple SmartHosts

I recognize the official word from Microsoft is:

If a smart hosted SMTP Send Connector has multiple smart hosts defined, load balancing and fault tolerance are accomplished using these smart hosts.

but what does that mean.  Is there a round robin?  What does load-balanced specifically mean in this case?

Thank you.

Thank you Tim,

I did read Paul's post earlier but it also does not specify that Round-Robin is used for Load-Balancing.

Any other articles describing this?
