tape backup basics

I am trying to learn some basics about tape backup systems from a risk management perspective. I am not involved in the actual performing of backups but from a risk and compliance angle I need some basic information:

1.      If we use a backup application which is installed on a specific server – what is the name of the attached device which handles the actual tape backup process? Tape backup server?

2.      What physical involvement is there with IT staff in relation to tape backup systems, do they insert the tapes each day, and remove once complete, or is it common the tapes are in position all week and then removed at the end of the week?

3.      Is each tape specific to an individual job, or do they same jobs store backups from multiple jobs/devices?

4.      How could you test if the team are using an effective tape rotation system, and are there any common mistakes/bad practices admins could follow in relation to this?

5.      If the tape backup "device" failed, what safeguards do you need in place specific to that device to ensure service can be restored quickly. Does the device itself need backing up/standby device on hand with build docs etc.

6.      What are 'catalogues' in relation to tape backups, and how could someone determine which tape holds the backup of which job/device?

On a compliance front I am more than happy to help you. One of the biggest issues I see from a regulatory/ compliance standpoint is having access to older legacy tapes.
In situations where the hardware or software has been upgraded over time can cause significant issues on discovery.
