surface RT restore

i just got a hand me down surface RT. twice when the battery was allowed to completely die, the device got stuck in an auto repair fail. i was able to reset the machine both times though it took multiple times each time (maybe unable to complete process until fully charged?), but the second time the machine shut down when i was running through the setup steps. when it came back up it was back in the failed auto repair cycle.

my husband said when he looked at it he found two recovery drives and deleted one. now the machine is requiring windows media.

i created a bootable usb but it fails after completing about 65% of the process.

i tried using the command prompt to rename system to system .001 and software to software.001 but it said the later was in use.

tried using a linux boot usb but woudlnt work then found articles online that stated microsoft purposefully locked down surface RTs from being able to be used with linux.

is it a paperweight at this point or is there something i am missing that i can try?

See if this helps - you can download a recovery image for your Surface and it should get it back to factory specs. Also, don't let your husband ever touch it again! :)

ASKER

Thank you William. I have tried that but am trying again in hopes that maybe i performed a step incorrectly when i first did it (for instance this time i made sure to use the diskpart to clean the drive whereas i didnt do that the first time).

and yes i am going to keep my devices out of my husband's hands LOL.
Make sure you choose that "Fully clean the drive" option to do a total wipe and start over.
Also make sure you are getting the Surface RT image and not a regular surface image... They are not the same...

i used the same iso (RT) but it worked this time. cleaning with diskpart appears to have made the difference.

thank you for the comments!
