Best way of sharing a calendar

My wife and I both use an iphone and gmail.
What is the best way for me to share important dates like our child's school timetable for the year, if I enter this directly into my iphone calendar rather than into my gmail calendar?  In the iphone calendar there is no share option even though I have access to her email inbox on her phone.  Does this all have to be driven by Google calender?

Also is there no way to categorise a calendar event on the iphone?

You can absolutely share iCloud calendars, check out this Apple support article.

You can install Google Calendar app in both iPhones and share your calendar with your wife or vice versa.

I take it there is no way I can enter it into my iphone calendar alone to accomplish thing same?

If I used the google calendar app, would that negate the use of entering it again in my iphone calendar as it should sync it all right?

Your Apple Calendar app will still have the info from Google Calendar but you cannot create event directly in Apple Calendar app as it will not sync to Google servers.

I am combining Exchange calendars and Gmail calendars on PC, Mac and several Iphones.
To get it all synchronized in a decent way, it took me a while, but now I'm quite happy with the way it works.
On Iphone I use Informant as calendar application.  It's much better than the default app and it has plenty of sync options.
On PC I use Gsyncit.  Gsyncit has the ability of synchronizing different calendars from different Google accounts at the same time.  For each calendar you can specify the connected other calendar (Exchange etc)
