Linux machines on a Windows network
Is there a way I can add a linux box to my domain network for monitoring purposes? I'm a complete novice on this particular topic and don't know if my question even makes sense, but I have lots of spare machines I could use and dozens of Linux software disks that have come with my subscriptions to LinuxUser and to Admin.
Is there a trade pub that would cover this, or a white paper?

Depends. What do you want to monitor? I have several Linux machines on my network and they don't monitor anything.
You can monitor non domain joined linux machines.
You can join linux machines to AD
You can monitor Windows machines using linux software like Nagios/Zabbix.

Try to explain out what you'd like to do, and we can better answer then...

I guess I'd like to know about intrusion attempts and port scans, block malware before it even gets to my servers, unusual network activity, assuming I could even define 'unusual'; in short, make a safer more secure network.

To flesh out a little more what I imagine: a linux box, with two Nics, one being a LAN port and the other a WAN, functioning as a front end to my LAN, between my modem and router (or between my router and switch?) rather like a SonicWall network appliance, that everything coming at us has to pass through - or not.
If you want it to work like a SonicWall, you would be better off buying one and using their knowledge. Unless you want to learn what they already know. That could be really time consuming to the point of being a full time job.

These are all seeming to be good answers to my question. I might mention that part of the impetus behind my question is having received or read in pubs over the years, and increasingly of late, promos for open-source software that purports to do that about which I asked. I wanted to home in on a specific thing or mix of things that would be do the job. At this point I'm in the learning and experimenting stage. Of course, my main concern about anything will be the medical maxim, "Do no harm."
There is certainly nothing wrong with evaluating the software by any means... just do it carefully.

Scott, I finally opened the link you sent. It's just what I was hoping for. Let the experimenting begin. Thank you ever so much, and thanks for Experts-Exchange.

PS. Imagine how pleased I was to see that ClearOS7 and KaliLinux are both on the DVD that came with the August 2017 issue of Admin Magazine. I might not have realized the potential of what was right there in my hands were it not for your replies to my question.
