macOS 10.12.6 Messages does not find contacts and more...
macOS 10.12.6 Messages no longer finds all iPhone contacts and earlier SMS Messages (to iPhone!!) were not delivered, To: entries are now colored orange (or red).
Messages returns 'Messages cannot send a message to 978846XXXX.
1234567890 is not registered with Message'
978846XXXX (used real number) worked before - why not now?
Entering known iPhone number as 10 digits turns green and returns 'Google Talk (Offline)'
Tried 'Jabber' (whatever that is) set to 'Available" - nogo here!
Sending message to myself with iPhone OK with iPhone - nothing on macOS Messages
What now?

>>> From the iPhone Text Message settings, locate the name of the Mac you want to enable send/receive SMS Text Message support for and toggle the switch next to the Mac name to the ON position (in this example it’s called Yosemite Air)
No such Mac name, however 'Messages can be sent between iPhone...and Mac... OK, why not?
While typing this received this on Mac OS 10.12. "Your Apple Id and phone number are now being used for iMessage on a new iPhone...etc." Its Ok, I agree - now what?
Issue still is can't see iMessages to iPhone on Mac(s).

Seems as none of the 6 bluetooth devices, including Mac are not paired. Attempt to pair iPhone --> Mac very briefly (less than 1 sec) displays Verification Code - will pursue.
From the Mac, open the Messages app if you haven’t done so already .. also check Bluetooth is enabled on both devices.
From the iPhone, open Settings app, go to “Messages” and then go to “Text Message Forwarding”
From the iPhone Text Message settings, locate the name of the Mac you want to enable send/receive SMS Text Message support for and toggle the switch next to the Mac name to the ON position (in this example it’s called Yosemite Air)
You'll have to enter an authorisation code on the computer to approve.
